Today we’d like to introduce you to Riley Steinger
Riley, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
In 2018, my life changed forever and I rescued Nubs! Nubs wasn’t just any dog; he was a three-legged, resilient survivor with a heart full of love and an undeniable spark that captured everyone’s attention.
I have always been passionate about animals, particularly rescue dogs. I believe in second chances, knowing that every dog—regardless of their past—deserves a loving home. Nubs embodied this belief, showing that even with a tough start in life, there was so much joy and adventure to be had. Starting his social media ultimately was for my friends and family to see but grew into something bigger and the thought was why not share Nubs’ story and, in doing so, advocate for rescue dogs everywhere?
Thus, @Nubsthepups was born.
I created an Instagram account, not just to document her life with Nubs but also to highlight the importance of rescuing dogs in need. With each post, I shared snippets of their life together—Nubs running joyfully on the beach, visiting dog-friendly local spots, and modeling for local businesses. Beginning a page of heartfelt, humorous, and relatable to other dog moms, particularly those who had rescue dogs or dogs with special needs.
Soon, the account began to grow. Other dog moms, especially those with rescue dogs or dogs who faced challenges like Nubs, started following. They connected with my journey, feeling inspired by my advocacy and Nubs’ courage. I then realized that I had the power to make a bigger impact, not just through Instagram but in real life.
This led to the start of my rescue work. I began organizing events that combined my love for dogs and my newfound influence. Since 2022 we have hosted over 7 rescue events for local rescues.
Over time, Nubs became the face of her movement—an ambassador for rescue dogs everywhere. He showed people that even dogs who weren’t “perfect” on the outside had boundless love and joy to give.
Through our Instagram, we also began working with local brands, supporting businesses that shared her passion for pets.
My journey with Nubs became more than just a personal story—it became a movement. Together, we are showing the world that rescue dogs are full of life, love, and surprises. And as our community of dog moms grew, so did their mission: to advocate for rescue dogs and to spread the message that every dog deserves a chance, no matter their circumstances.
In the end, it is not about followers or brand deals. It is about the lives we will continue to touch—both dogs and people—and the joy of knowing they had made a difference, one paw at a time.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Nubs’ journey as a three-legged dog has been filled with both challenges and triumphs. From the start, adjusting to life without a fourth leg tested his balance and mobility, making everyday activities like running, climbing stairs, and even playing with other dogs more difficult. He often tires more quickly, and his remaining legs had to work harder to keep him moving. But despite these struggles, Nubs’ spirit never wavered. He learned to navigate the world in his own way, adapting with resilience and determination. His courage became an inspiration to those around him, showing that even with physical limitations, he could still live a joyful, adventurous life.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
As a rescue advocate, I have found both deep satisfaction and occasional frustrations along the way. One of my favorite aspects is seeing the transformation of rescue dogs—from scared, neglected animals to joyful, loving companions. I love connecting with other rescue dog moms, sharing stories, and raising awareness through her events and social media platform. Organizing fundraisers like “Costumes for a Cause” brings her joy, especially knowing the impact it makes on local rescues. The sense of community she’s built around @Nubsthepups is one of the most fulfilling parts of her work.
However, there are also tough moments. Riley dislikes the heartbreaking reality that so many dogs still face neglect or abuse. The overwhelming number of dogs in need can sometimes feel daunting, and it’s hard not to feel frustrated when she can’t help them all. Dealing with misconceptions about rescue dogs—such as people assuming they’re “damaged” or undesirable—is another challenge she faces. Despite these difficulties, I remain committed to her advocacy, knowing that every small step makes a big difference in the lives of these dogs.
