Daily Inspiration: Meet Brina

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brina

Hi Brina, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My name is Brina and I am a Haitian-American kompa-pop artist. Since I was a little girl, I loved music. I’ve always had dreams of becoming a singer, but wasn’t always sure of how I would get there. Long story short, I met a family friend named Ruben Raymond (now my current producer) who played piano at my church while I sang. We quickly became close over our love of music. He’s the one that took me to my first session, taught me song structure, and piano chords. Meeting him drastically changed my life. Although I know I still would’ve pursued music without meeting him, I can’t imagine how different my life would be had that not have happened. With my own hard work, determination, and persistence mixed in with that experience, I am now doing what I have always wanted to do and I am now the artist I’ve always wanted to be.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s weird because although I have always considered myself to be confident in my talents and abilities, early on I struggled with a lot of doubt. I knew I could reach these dreams and goals, but the fear of putting myself out there was definitely something that I had to overcome.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I make kompa-pop music. As a Haitian-American artist I add my own twist to it by singing mostly in english, adding a little kreyòl from time to time, and incorporating a pop sound. I think that’s what sets me apart from others. My sound isn’t that popular in the sense that there aren’t many artists merging the two. Don’t get me wrong there are definitely other artists in this area, but not that many compared to other niche genres. I am just really proud of myself for the fact that I stayed true to who I am.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Maybe that I write my own music and that I handle all of my business by myself. Not going to lie, it does get overwhelming sometimes but that’s just how it usually goes in the beginning, especially as an independent artist.
