Inspiring Conversations with Leticia Perez of DEFCON System Corp

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leticia Perez

Hi Leticia, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
In Spain, I am a dental hygienist and I help my husband with his DEFCON System Academy, which offers self-defense, martial arts, and anti-bullying and child defense classes. Specifically, I specialize in gender violence and anti-bullying. I arrived with my husband from Spain to Miami just 2 months ago. My husband’s great dream was to be able to bring the System to the USA and we began applying for a visa more than a year ago. Finally, in August, he was granted the Visa for Extraordinary Abilities and I, as his spouse, was able to accompany him on this American adventure. As I mentioned before, in Spain we have several Academies in the province of Alicante, where our DEFCON System is exclusively taught. Luckily, people are very receptive and feel the need to train with us to feel safe. So for quite a few years now, my husband has dedicated himself exclusively to this. He is called from different parts of Europe, such as London, Italy, Switzerland… to teach seminars and courses on the DEFCON System. And luckily, I can accompany him on all his trips to teach the seminar and support and help all the participants. So, for the last 2 months we have been permanently in Miami, in order to make ourselves known and expand self-defense in this city and in the other States where we are requested.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It is not easy to leave behind a whole life in Spain, a family, a fully functioning business and leave a stable and well-paid job. But the hope of being able to transfer what we have in our city to the United States has overcome everything! We wanted to get out of our comfort zone and Miami had us in love since we visited it for the first time.

We’ve been impressed with DEFCON System Corp , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
DEFCON System is a self-defense system, created and structured by my husband, Jesus Moya. Designed for survival in the street in the face of any violent situation, threat or attempted aggression. It is made so that all types of people can train it and learn how to act before, during and after any type of unpleasant situation that may happen to us in our daily lives. DEFCON System is structured, directed and recommended for ALL PUBLIC as there is a specific program, DEFCON Kids, for children from 5 to 11 years old, which prepares the little warriors technically, physically and psychologically, and thus they create those solid foundations that will be very useful when entering the adult program. They are not sums of techniques, it is a structured work which makes the assimilation and learning of the System more understandable and easier. It is not necessary to have previous experience in martial arts, there is no age or s*x limit. In fact, we have great Warriors within our team in Europe. And we hope to soon have a large group of empowered women in Miami who want to train and feel safe on the street thanks to our system. It is a unique and powerful self-defense system. On our social networks you can see the great reach it has and the good response from spectators and practitioners.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
In our case, I can tell you about assuming risk in the only way we do it in Europe. In our Academies, if you want to be a DEFCON student, you must belong to the Wrestling Federation so that any injury that may occur while training, being an accident, is covered by medical insurance. But we do make the student sign a document exempting us from responsibility, given the consequences and risks that it may entail. And the student is responsible for his actions. In any case, DEFCON is structured so that every student can train safely and without risks.
