Exploring Life & Business with Standley Tilerin of TAX RESOLUTION CENTRE

Today we’d like to introduce you to Standley Tilerin

Hi STANDLEY, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
The Story of Standley Tilerin, EA – A Journey of Purpose, Perseverance, and Triumph
My journey into the world of taxation and finance is rooted in resilience, grit, and the desire to create meaningful change in people’s lives. I was born the youngest of six children to immigrant parents from Haiti, and my upbringing in Sunrise and Lauderhill, Florida, exposed me early on to the struggles that many families face. Growing up, I saw how the lack of financial education impacted not only individual households but also entire communities. It planted the first seeds of curiosity in me about money, taxes, and economic systems.

After high school, I didn’t dive straight into finance. I was trying to find my footing, figuring out what path could align with my strengths. But everything shifted when I met my mentor, Noe Mompoint, who opened my eyes to the world of taxes. Noe not only taught me the mechanics of taxation but also ignited a passion in me for teaching and helping others understand a system that seems complicated, intimidating, and overwhelming for so many.

I pursued my studies in Accounting at Keiser University, and in 2007, I officially became an Enrolled Agent (EA). From the start, I had a hunger to do more than just file tax returns—I wanted to solve problems that most people didn’t know how to fix. I started working with clients who had IRS debt and complicated tax issues, realizing there was a massive gap in knowledge. Many people were drowning in tax debt simply because they didn’t understand the system or how to use it to their advantage. That became my mission: to teach others how to navigate and leverage the tax code for their benefit.

But it wasn’t an easy ride.

The Challenges I Faced and Overcame
One of the biggest challenges I faced early in my career was earning trust. As a young professional—often the youngest in the room—I had to prove that I knew what I was doing. The industry can be skeptical, especially when you’re working with clients who are entrusting you with their finances and businesses. It took time, but with every successful resolution, I built a reputation. I’ve now helped reduce millions of dollars in IRS tax debt for clients and trained over 3,000 tax professionals and 400 tax firms—but getting to that level was about building trust one client at a time.

Another major challenge was adapting to the rapid changes in the tax and financial landscape. Staying ahead meant learning continuously, even when new tax laws, crypto investments, and IRS regulations disrupted the way we do business. I saw the rise of blockchain and cryptocurrency, and instead of shying away from it, I leaned in. I’m proud to say that I now operate the first crypto tax office in Florida and was one of the early adopters of virtual offices in the metaverse. I wanted to be at the forefront of helping clients understand this new economy and the tax challenges that come with it.

Another obstacle I had to overcome was balance and burnout. The taxation industry is unforgiving, especially during tax season. Managing the demands of my business while still creating space to teach, mentor, and grow was an uphill battle. I had to learn the importance of self-discipline and systems—not just in business but in life. That’s where my role as the Success Surgeon was born. I began designing systems for my clients and students to diagnose financial challenges, plan for the future, and align their personal and professional lives in a way that promotes long-term success.

There were also personal sacrifices along the way. The journey to success often requires giving up comfort. I worked long hours, sacrificed time with loved ones, and faced moments of doubt, wondering if it would all pay off. But every challenge strengthened my commitment to the path I had chosen. Seeing the positive impact I could have on clients and communities motivated me to keep pushing forward.

Finding My Purpose Through Education and Innovation
Through all the challenges, one thing became crystal clear: Education is the key to empowerment. That’s why teaching is so important to me. Whether I’m leading courses on IRS resolutions or teaching young women about financial literacy, my goal is to equip people with tools they can use to change their lives. I’ve had the honor of lecturing at Broward College, crypto conferences, and I Genius, and my podcast, “Cost of Game Sold,” gives me another platform to share the lessons I’ve learned about business, success, and life.

I’ve also focused on innovating within the tax industry. I created Tax Notch, a tax preparation software company that provides training and tools for EROs to excel. Additionally, I’m developing card games to teach financial literacy and tax strategies in a fun, engaging way. It’s my way of reaching more people and breaking down the stigma and confusion surrounding money and taxes.

In recent years, I’ve also shifted focus toward helping entrepreneurs, especially in the beauty and service industries. With my business masterclass events and upcoming courses, I’m teaching small business owners how to run their companies like corporations—covering everything from payroll and taxes to retirement plans and trademarks. My goal is to help these entrepreneurs build wealth and create sustainable businesses.

What Drives Me Today
Today, as the head of the Tax Resolution Centre, an educator, and entrepreneur, my focus remains on helping others build financial freedom. Whether it’s through tax strategies, crypto investments, or business planning, I’m passionate about teaching people how to achieve their dreams. My work isn’t just about numbers; it’s about empowering others to understand their worth, take control of their finances, and build something meaningful.

The lessons I’ve learned throughout my career—about perseverance, discipline, and faith—continue to shape me. I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve communities, work with business owners, and help people rewrite their financial futures. The road hasn’t been easy, but every challenge was worth it. And I know the best is yet to come.

This is my story—a journey of struggle, faith, and success. And now, my mission is to share that journey with others so they can win their own financial battles and discover the freedom they deserve

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Advice for Those Starting Out in Tax, Finance, and Entrepreneurship
If you’re just starting out in the tax industry, finance, or entrepreneurship, welcome to the journey! There will be challenges along the way, but with the right mindset, preparation, and guidance, you can build something great. Here are some of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned through years of experience—things I wish I knew when I first started:

1. Master the Fundamentals – Become Obsessed with Learning
When I first started, I quickly realized that the tax code, laws, and financial systems are constantly changing. Staying ahead of the game requires continuous learning. If you are starting out, invest time into mastering the basics, but don’t stop there. Go deeper into specialized areas like IRS resolutions, corporate taxes, or crypto investments—the more niche your knowledge, the more valuable you’ll become.

Advice:

Find a mentor—someone who has already been through the struggles.
Study IRS processes, key forms, and legal strategies.
Don’t hesitate to invest in professional courses, books, and networking events.
2. Build Relationships, Not Just Transactions
One of the biggest things I wish I had focused on earlier is building genuine relationships with clients and partners. Your reputation in this industry is everything. Clients will return, refer others, and even become your best advocates if they trust and connect with you. In the beginning, I focused more on getting results—but I later realized that long-term success comes from relationship-building just as much as technical expertise.

Advice:

Listen first—every client and partner has a story. Make them feel heard.
Treat every interaction like it could be the start of a long-term partnership.
Network consistently—whether through local chambers, professional groups, or online communities.
3. Learn the Business Side Early
A lot of professionals focus only on their craft and ignore the business aspect—things like payroll, expenses, contracts, and marketing. If I had known earlier how important these elements were, I would have grown faster. Whether you’re a tax preparer, business owner, or freelancer, think like a CEO from day one.

Advice:

Incorporate your business properly and get your finances in order.
Understand the basics of bookkeeping, payroll, and marketing.
Set up clear contracts and processes for your clients.
4. Value Discipline Over Motivation
One of the hardest lessons I learned was that motivation fades, but discipline sustains you. There will be seasons where the workload is overwhelming, when everything seems uncertain, or when you hit a wall. The people who succeed are the ones who show up consistently, even on the hard days. I’ve learned that it’s the small, disciplined actions that build momentum over time.

Advice:

Develop daily routines that focus on your most important tasks.
Track your progress—it’s easy to forget how far you’ve come.
Celebrate small wins to stay motivated for the long haul.
5. Embrace Technology and Innovation Early
The world is changing faster than ever. I wish I had adopted new tools and trends sooner, like cryptocurrency taxation, virtual offices, and automated solutions. In today’s world, being open to technology and staying ahead of industry trends will give you a massive competitive edge.

Advice:

Learn to use tools like QuickBooks, Excel, and client portals effectively.
Stay informed on emerging technologies like blockchain, AI, and virtual platforms.
Don’t be afraid to try new things—innovation often comes from experimentation.
6. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help or Make Mistakes
When I started out, I thought I needed to have all the answers. But here’s the truth: Mistakes are part of the learning process. The key is to ask for help when you need it and to treat failures as lessons. I’ve made my fair share of mistakes along the way, but each one made me better.

Advice:

Seek mentors and join professional organizations—like the NAEA or ASTPS.
View mistakes as opportunities to learn and grow.
Hire professionals when needed—whether it’s legal, marketing, or accounting help.
7. Find Your Niche and Double Down on It
The tax and financial industry is vast—find your niche and become an expert in that area. Early on, I saw the value of specializing in IRS resolutions and crypto tax services, which gave me a unique edge. When you find your niche, you not only set yourself apart but also attract the right clients who need exactly what you offer.

Advice:

Explore various fields to see what excites you—whether it’s individual taxes, business consulting, or crypto taxes.
Once you find your focus, become the go-to expert in that area.
Keep evolving—as markets shift, stay open to new opportunities.
8. Take Care of Yourself Along the Way
When I started my business, I was so focused on success that I neglected self-care. Burnout is real, especially during tax season or when running a business. The lesson I’ve learned is that you can’t pour from an empty cup. Success is a marathon, not a sprint, and maintaining your health and well-being is critical.

Advice:

Schedule regular breaks—even during busy seasons.
Make time for exercise, hobbies, and family.
Surround yourself with a support system that lifts you up.
9. Focus on Impact, Not Just Income
In the beginning, it’s easy to focus only on making money, but over time, I realized that true success comes from the impact you create. The more people you help, the more your business will grow. Clients can sense when your focus is genuinely on their success—and that builds loyalty.

Advice:

Make client success your priority—income will follow.
Align your business goals with a larger purpose.
Always ask, “How can I add more value?”
10. Trust the Process and Enjoy the Journey
Looking back, I realize that every challenge I faced taught me something valuable. The struggles and victories are all part of the process. Success doesn’t happen overnight—be patient with yourself. The most important thing is to enjoy the journey and learn to embrace both the wins and the lessons along the way.

Advice:

Set realistic expectations—success takes time.
Celebrate the small wins—every step counts.
Stay persistent—the challenges will make your story worth telling.
Starting a career or business can feel overwhelming, but with discipline, learning, relationships, and innovation, you’ll build something meaningful. If I could leave you with one final piece of advice, it would be this: Believe in yourself, and don’t be afraid to dream big. Your journey will be uniquely yours—embrace it, grow from it, and let it lead you to your purpose.
