Today we’d like to introduce you to Rená Boothe.
Hi Rená, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello, thank you for this amazing opportunity. I’m truly honored. My name is Rená Boothe, I’m a gel manicurist, mentor, mommy of 2 amazing little boys, and co-found of Sage Spa FTL. My journey to becoming a salon owner began with a childhood fascination for the beauty world, it was particularly in hair and makeup however at about 20 years old, my path took an unexpected turn.
I caught a glance of a stunning manicure adorned with intricate designs and dazzling embellishments that my coworker was wearing and I’ve been captivated by nails ever since.
It was a transformative moment that led me to enroll in nail school.
I became a licensed full specialist in 2014 (wow I still can’t believe it’s been a decade lol that’s wild) and, after honing my skills in various salons for two years, I realized I longed for deeper connections with my clients. This realization propelled me to take a bold leap of faith, leaving my job to start a mobile nail styling business.
Within a few months, that turned into the establishment of a home-based studio, where word-of-mouth recommendations rapidly filled my schedule. And in just about two years, my clientele grew so much that I had to close my calendar and even my waitlist, which had over 150 entries.
Naturally the next big move was to duplicate what I had accomplished in my own little world. I really wanted to make what I do more accessible to women and finally get those people out my wait-list.
So I decided to open a salon with my old band-mate, turned lash tech, and now business partner.
We faced the greatest test of faith to get those doors open. It took 2.5 years, literally 30 months of overcoming obstacle after obstacle by nothing but the grace of God. I’m proud that last June we were able to celebrate 2 years of business and I pray for many more blessed years delivering quality care and service to the community.
Today, I share my experiences to inspire others, hoping my knowledge can guide and motivate others on their own entrepreneurial nail biz journeys.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Let me say it this way. It’s smooth when your complacent or at a plateau, but the moment you decide to elevate here comes trouble. Lol.
There are two challenging periods in my career that I clearly remember. The first occurred in the beginning of my business journey, when I had no business model or plan, and I was just working mindlessly, living off credit cards with nothing but a wish and a dream. I realized that something needed to change, because I had no idea how I would get by week to week and it was stressful. That’s when I put pen to paper, started monitoring my income better, and things made a huge shift.
The second was the opening of Sage Spa FTL. Oh, what an experience! We thought it was going to be open in 3 months, MAX. As a matter of fact 2 months in covid hit and that was just the beginning of the drama. The contractors we hired were another piece of work.
That experience taught me that even when the situation looks impossible, just keep pressing forward until your breakthrough.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in gel nails. Specifically a 21-day structured gel manicure that my clients drive cross-county for.
I believe I’m recognized for the meticulous cleanliness of my work. I have a blessed eye for detail and I make sure that everything that leaves my desk is next to perfect.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Oh I have so much advice that I would share from my experiences, and I’ve noticed that many individuals quit the industry because it’s challenging rising above the tide.
Here are a few insights that come to mind:
If you’re passionate about it, continue to pursue it. Train your eyes to notice the details, as the beauty of nails lies in their balance & symmetry. Acquire marketing skills and maintain good bookkeeping- I like the quickbooks self-employed app. Lastly, if you aim for long-term success, ensure that your business operates legitimately..
