Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Sonia Davidson
Hi Dr. Sonia, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born into a family of immigrants who had little resources. However, we are a talented family with singers, musicians, creatives, and entrepreneurs. This drive transferred to me. I did not perform well academically in school as a result of childhood traumas. However, undeterred, when I graduated high school, I wanted to go to college. Without any financial assistance, this as not an option for me at the time. I would regularly envision myself as a college student, and started to journal it, discuss it, and pray about it. I started working for a university, which gave me access to my dream of earning my degree. After my first degree, a passion to pursue education was ignited in me, and 25 years later, it has continued.
As a result of my innate desire for lifelong learning, I earned the following degrees: Bachelor of Science in Education, my Master of Business Administration (MBA), a Doctor of Education in Organizational Leadership, and two additional master’s degrees in Reading Education and English Education. I am currently one course away from my fourth Master of Science in Special Education, which will be completed by March 2025. Forever pursuing higher education, I was recently admitted into a Master of Jurisprudence in Employment Law from Tulane University’s School of Law and the Master of Arts in Executive Leadership at Liberty University. My academic achievements have made me one of the top few women of color to have earned a record five or more graduate degrees nationwide.
During my educational pursuits, I taught college courses, which allowed me to help others become better versions of themselves through knowledge, information, and inspiration. This is also when I became a Certified Professional Life Coach. I soon realized the need for someone to provide focus. Sometimes, all it takes is to be reaffirmed and redirected for us to get the next level in our personal and professional lives. In 2018, I was inspired to start “Empowered to Empower” luncheons, self-sponsored events designed to create a space for women to share, engage, and uplift one another. These gatherings have grown in popularity, with attendance rapidly increasing each year. I also facilitate empowerment workshops for women’s groups on a plethora of topics, from self-care to career improvement.
This year, I founded Uncommon Journey Empowerment Coaching Services, which offers online group coaching programs using a multi-tiered approach. From the person who is knew at goal-setting to the advanced achiever, these programs provide participants with effective tools they can use immediately to enhance their lives and reshape their future. As a motivational speaker, I am honored to share my testimony that trauma can become triumph with the right guidance and a positive outlook. As an empowerment coach, I have the opportunity to lead others into setting personalized, realistic, and attainable goals that they can resonate with. Through resilience, faith, and giving back, anyone can achieve their dreams and use their past as stepping stones for greatness. This is the message I get to model for my young daughter every day.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not been easy. Quite frankly, there were many negative people around, including some family members who criticized my zeal and determination to make an indelible mark in life. This was especially troublesome since many of those individuals were ones that I have helped as I was acquiring knowledge, education, and resources. Having to drown out all the toxic noise was the greatest challenge.
We’ve been impressed with Uncommon Journey Empowerment Coaching Services, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Uncommon Journey Empowerment Coaching Services features signature online group coaching programs that empower clients to embark on a path of self-awareness, goal setting, and establishing a plan for success in accelerated time. Uncommon Journey uses a multi-tiered approach, offering guidance and tools for anyone to evaluate where they are and determine where they desire to go. One of my greatest abilities is how well I motivate people to become better, starting with their outlook and the plan they design to reach their goals. In the group coaching model, participants will draw strength and encouragement from the interactive exercises, breakout sessions, and strategies used in the sessions. They will be able to engage with others, all from the comfort of their own home.
We chose the name, Uncommon Journey, to highlight that everyone has their own unique pathway that our life takes from the time we are born. Much of it starts outside of our control. However, we can change the course of our future with determination and focus. One of the characteristics that sets Uncommon Journey apart from other coaching organizations is my experience, credentials and achievements in record time, and life story as the founder. Moreover, I recognized that by identifying real-life obstacles and addressing those challenges head on. By doing so, including sharing my own life journey, individuals will feel empowered to use experiences as stepping stones to greatness.
There are three tiers : Emeralds Program (Tier 1) -one, 50-minute session; Rubies Program (Tier 2)- a four-week, 2 hour session that meets once weekly- for detailed goal planning and self-improvement; and Diamonds Program (Tier 3), a four-week, 2 hour session that meets once weekly for a deeper dive, including personal branding, presentation skills, and guest therapist. Strategies are proven and results can be seen in accelerated time.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Sure! The coaching industry will continue to grow in the next 5-10 years because of the vast need for the services that a good empowerment coach provides. Since more people are seeking real-time information and guidance in a shortened timetable, there will be a greater shift for program expansion. Additionally, there may eventually be a need to onboard more empowerment coaches who are niched in providing more personalized and strategic services to meet the growing demand.
