Today we’d like to introduce you to Lorena Calderon
Hi Lorena, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always had thin, fine hair and constantly wished for luscious, thick, and healthy hair. I always envied and lusted over other women’s hair. I was always disappointed when I tried to style my hair and it would fall flat and limp. After the birth of my boys, I lost even more hair during postpartum, which made me incredibly self-conscious. I was constantly searching for ways to make my hair look fuller and more voluminous. The visible thinning on my scalp often left me in tears. I felt depleted, hopeless, and lacking confidence.
I tried supplements, hair serums, and topical treatments, but none gave me the hair of my dreams. Then, in 2020, I discovered the world of alternative hair on Instagram. I saw women wearing wigs and toppers and envied the confidence and glamour they radiated. So, I decided to buy myself a hair piece, and the rest is history. There was a learning curve, but over time, I gained so much by wearing alternative hair. I finally felt like myself—put together, beautiful, and confident.
I created a hair page on Instagram to reach out to women and share the wonders of alternative hair. My goal is to normalize wearing wigs, especially in the Latin community, where it’s still considered taboo. I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with many brands and have learned so much about the intricate world of wigs.
I even partnered with a friend to create a digital course where we teach women the ins and outs of wearing wigs, providing a roadmap to make the process less overwhelming and tedious. We also offer coaching sessions. Wearing alternative hair truly changed my life and helped me find my true passion in life.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There is definitely a learning curve in wearing hair. It takes a lot of research, practice and patience. This is part of the reason why creating the digital course Wig Wearing 101 was so important to my partner and I. We wanted to help save ladies all the heartache, cost and frustration we faced along the way. Creating content is not an easy path. Burnout, imposter syndrome and comparing yourself to others are definitely things that I have faced trying to grow on social media. However, whenever a lady reaches out to me and thanks me for inspiring them it definitely makes it all worthwhile.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Content Creator
I started creating content on social media in 2020. Once I realized how life-changing wearing hair was, I wanted to share it with all the women out there who needed to know about it. I remembered how alone, isolated, and misunderstood I felt when I was struggling with my hair loss. I thought no one could relate and that I was the only one going through it. Social media proved me wrong, and I found a community of courageous, inspiring, and beautiful women supporting one another on their journeys. I wanted to do the same.
I’ve had the opportunity to work with incredible hair brands, both human hair and synthetics. I’ve learned so much about the wonders of wigs and am truly passionate about normalizing wearing wigs. I want wigs to be as mainstream as hair extensions because, in reality, they’re just another way for women to enhance their beauty.
Most people think wigs are obvious and “wiggy,” but nowadays, wigs can look incredibly realistic and natural. People would never guess you’re wearing one. My goal is to help women feel beautiful, confident, and unstoppable while wearing wigs.
I’m extremely proud of the digital course my partner and I created, as I believe it’s essential for every woman starting her wig-wearing journey. Right now, I’m one of the few Latina wig content creators, and that’s largely because many women who wear hair don’t want to disclose it—and that’s totally okay. However, I want to use my platform to normalize wig-wearing and make it fashionable and trendy. I always say I never leave home without my final accessory—my hurr (aka my wig!)
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned about wearing hair is that the key to happiness is making choices that improve your quality of life. Too often, people get stuck worrying about what others will think or say. Honestly, I lived that way for so long, and it only made me miserable and unfulfilled. Focusing on what brings you joy and happiness is one of the most important things in life.
