Today we’d like to introduce you to Rene Farias
Hi Rene, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a passionate Cuban artist who has been captivated by painting and the artistic representation of the human body since childhood. My work explores the intricate symbolism, fears, and desires intertwined with sexuality and eroticism. Although I began painting at an early age, my journey was constrained by the scarcity of materials in Cuba and the government’s lack of support for emerging artists whose work did not align with its political interests.
It was not until I relocated to Barcelona in 2019 that I could fully dedicate myself to my artistic practice. While I had previously worked with oil and graphite, the 2020 lockdown inspired me to explore watercolor, which has since become one of my primary mediums. Art is my vehicle for expressing my ideas and emotions, and I find profound fulfillment in this creative process. In November 2023, I moved to Miami with my husband, eager to continue my artistic journey.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road. Committing to painting every day to hone my skills has been crucial, but I’ve also had to become adept at social media to gain visibility for my work. Additionally, navigating the constant censorship on platforms like Instagram presents ongoing challenges. Despite these struggles, the rewarding results of my efforts make the journey worthwhile.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
:
I am an artist who specializes in homoerotic art, although this is not the only theme I explore. I enjoy delving into the taboos and fantasies of the human psyche, examining its fears and desires through the sexuality and sensuality of the body. My work represents the male figure as one of strength and power, yet also embraces vulnerability and fragility, reflecting the complexities of change. I aim to portray authenticity in my art while steering clear of the vulgar and trivial, seeking to elevate the conversation around sexuality and human experience.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
As an artist, the most valuable lesson I learned during the COVID lockdown is that no skill can improve without consistent practice. It is through dedication and hard work that we begin to uncover who we are as artists and identify our true field. Additionally, I realized the profound importance of touch and physical contact, which is a theme reflected in my work. We are social beings, and we owe it to ourselves to embrace this connection; it is the greatest expression of affection.
