Community Highlights: Meet Jay Britto of Britto Charette

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Britto

Hi Jay, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew up in Peru and moved to the US at the age of 16. I lived in NY for six years and then moved to Miami to go to school for design. After school, I started my design career and then in 2010 I partnered with David Charette and formed Britto Charette.

My interest in design evolved, really. Music was one of my first passions and essentially opened the door to creativity and the arts for me. At eighteen, when I was struggling with affording college and choosing a major (architecture or interiors), music was always there, pushing me forward. Patterns and rhythms in music just seemed to be echoed in everything around me. That’s when I realized that my calling was actually interiors. I could walk into a space and visualize the textures, colors, and patterns that it needed. Those are attributes that I still lean on when designing an interior. Colors, textures, culture, the importance of family—those all contribute to my design process. I understand the need to design spaces that bring families and friends together in comfortable yet beautiful surroundings.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has been very difficult because I didn’t have a mentor or a company to work for and gain experience. So I had to learn as I was going along–alone and by trial and error. It took me longer to get here because I didn’t have the resources, nor the help and guidance that a good mentor can provide.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Britto Charette?
What sets us apart is our approach to design–it’s a global approach not just regional. Although we are in Miami, our interiors show a level of sophistication that is in keeping with NY, Milan, and Paris. I’m most proud of the type of projects that we are launching and the new products that we are designing–collectibles that are sold in high-end galleries.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Even if you have to work for free, do an internship at a firm that resonates with you–whose designs or work or processes are in tune with your goals and aesthetic. Whether you want to work for them or be entrepreneurial and have your own business, learn from them. It’s an absolutely invaluable way to get experience and information.

And when you are just starting out, it can feel overwhelming. Stay focused and persevere.
