Today we’d like to introduce you to Errol Bryant
Hi Errol, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Miami Central Rockets Alumni Association (MCRAA), came into existence in September of 2005. Our beloved Alma Mater was being threatened with shutting down, do to a lack of academic excelling along with a number of other schools in the district. Upon hearing this, a large number of alums decided to band together and see what we could do to help the schools, students, and faculty to keep the doors of Miami Central open and Operating.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road at all. Over the years we’ve been met with a number of obstacles and barriers. Mostly, due to inadequate support from those that promised to be a help in the district, County- and state of Florida. We received very little in the way of support be it financial, personnel or resources. Yet, we still fought and continue to fight for fair and equal opportunities for schools like Miami Central as well as others in the inner city.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Although, I know serve as the current President of the Miami Central Rockets Alumni Association (MCRAA). I am also a Miami- Dade County Schools employee, For the past fifteen (15) years, I have worked as a Security Specialist for the Miami-Dade County Public Schools Police Department. Currently assigned to the School Board building in downtown Miami, I along with several others Specialist, oversee the daily running and security of the building.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up in Miami Dade County-, I was somewhat of a wayward child. Very undisciplined and unruly to say the least. I wasn’t much for respecting and accepting guidance of leadership from those in authority. I was a bit out of control. However, when it came to school I excelled exceptionally well academically and athletically. School was more than a learning institution for me. It was somewhat of a safe haven from the rigorous life-style live and led by those close to me outside of school. I’m grateful for the tough love poured into me from some of the great Teachers, such as Mrs. Yvonne Grice and Administrators like the late Mr. Ronald Majors, that cared enough to make sure myself and other stayed in our books and disciplined us with love and care.
