Community Highlights: Meet Lisa Fernandez of Dr. Lisa Physical Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Fernandez

Hi Lisa, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m originally from Michigan and moved to South Florida (Surfside) in 2002 and have lived in the Surf-Bal-Bay area ever since! I have a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree and a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Physiology as well as over 25 years experience in fitness, wellness, and rehabilitation. I’ve worked in hospitals, inpatient rehabilitation, and outpatient orthopedic clinics, and have owned a boutique fitness studio. About 3 years ago I decided to start my own Concierge Physical Therapy and wellness business as a side hustle. It has now grown to a full-time business! I see clients in their homes or office in North Dade (Surfside, Bal Harbour, Bay Harbor, Sunny Isles, Miami Shores and Aventura) and in South Broward (Hollywood, Pembroke Pines, and Hallandale Beach). Two years ago I also completed my National Pilates instructor certification and see clients for Private Pilates sessions and teach group classes in Coconut Grove. My main reason originally for starting my own business was to have greater flexibility in my schedule for a better work/life balance. I have a 16-year old son who is very active in school and sports and I wanted to be able to attend his activities without worrying about taking time off from my employer. It’s definitely been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in my career!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It started off slowly but I have been blessed with some amazing clients and patients along the way who have been great referral sources that helped grow my business! Many times I end up treating most members of a family – everyone seems to have some sort of injury/issue that needs help, or just want to feel stronger and healthier!

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Dr. Lisa Physical Therapy?
I am a Concierge Doctor of Physical Therapy that provides all the benefits of outpatient physical therapy in the comfort of your home, pool, gym or office! In Physical Therapy I specialize in treating patients with Orthopedic and Sports Injuries as well as those having neurological or balance disorders. I utilize manual therapy and therapeutic exercise along with patient education and improving biomechanics and posture in order to facilitate my patients’ return to function. I use techniques such as Dry Needling, Blood flow restriction (BFR) training, Instrument-Assisted soft tissue mobilization, Kinesiotaping, laser, and cupping therapy. Physical Therapy is not just for injury rehab and in Florida you don’t need a physician referral to get PT. I also provide wellness, recovery services, and injury-prevention sessions aimed at helping people move better and live better, improve their posture or balance, or to get that extra edge in their favorite sport or hobby! I am a Certified pregnancy and postpartum corrective exercise specialist as well as a Nationally-Certified Pilates Instructor and offer private Pilates sessions that focus on core strength, flexibility, and overall body alignment.

I think what sets me apart is not only that I have so many years experience in many different areas, but I’m constantly learning and using new, evidence-based techniques that provide that extra edge in helping patients and clients achieve their goals. I also truly care about my clients and as a concierge healthcare provider I’m available for people to answer questions about their injury or program.

I’m most proud of simply being able to help people of all ages and levels: from kids/teenagers to elderly adults, from sports therapy to geriatric rehabilitation; I cover it all!

All sessions are provided in the comfort of your home, your pool, your office, or your gym; and each patient/client has my undivided attention personalized to their needs!

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
One thing that I frequently use is an app called “Complete Anatomy”. It’s a 3D, interactive anatomy app that is really helpful in educating my patients and clients about their body (muscles, nerves, tendons, etc.) and to help them understand the root cause of their injury or issue. People are usually amazed by how complex and interconnected our bodies are!
