Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Barnes
Hi Lisa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
This story is about the Voice of the Caribbean radio stations. Our stations are owned and operated by a team that has been in the Caribbean radio business for over 30 years. With that experience, 8 years ago our CEO, Michael Downer, started the station and it has become one of the only 24 hr Caribbean formatted stations in the country, serving the diaspora and beyond. We are a community station that is heavily involved in local activities. Musically our focus is on Reggae, Dancehall and Soca. There have been many challenges along the way but we have a dedicated team of volunteers who keep the ball rolling forward.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have been many, we’ve been through a fire burning down the station, we also had to do a total rebranding of the station the beginning of 2024 as we had to make a dial change. Financing has always been a challenge because our business model and licensing only allows us to accept sponsorships, underwriting or donations. And that is a challenge
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am the program director and also an on air DJ. I have been a reggae DJ for over 35 years. The voice of the Caribbean has a full team of talented DJs
What are your plans for the future?
We hope to continue to grow our platform and expand our reach and in doing we hope to elevate the genre to a higher level with greater exposure
