Rising Stars: Meet Tamy Idrobo of Milwaukee- Wisconsin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamy Idrobo

Hi Tamy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story in the fashion world begins when I was 17 years old. I wanted to create fashion content but I didn’t have enough money to go to the luxury stores in my city, Cali, to buy the amount of clothes I needed, so I said, why not remodel my old clothes? My grandmother is also a fashion designer, so I had everything in my house to be a designer too, or simply to remodel my clothes for my videos. That’s how it started, curious and precisely because of the design, because of upcycling, which is one of the techniques that I most identify with. When my grandmother saw my enthusiasm, she asked me if I wanted to study fashion, because I was at the stage where I didn’t know what to study. My parents were pressuring me to pursue a career that would bring in “money.” I had already done ballet for 15 years of my life but I wasn’t passionate about it. I did a semester of social communication and journalism and it didn’t satisfy me either until fashion came into my life. I decided not to enter the fashion university in my city because without having classes I already had some knowledge, that I already knew how to sew, and I did not want to go at the pace of other people and I decided to take personalized Fashion Design classes with a teacher in my city of Cali. After studying design for 5 months I discovered that it was what I was most passionate about! At 18 years old I did my first fashion styling for a musical band in my city, they loved my work and I joined their team to be their stylist for their musical project, with them I explored many styles, I began to create a lot of different clothes, and I left my comfort zone, I became known in my city as a stylist and designer, and also as a digital fashion influencer, in my city they hold awards for talent and fashion in the Cauca Valley and I have been nominated 3 times in the category of best digital fashion influencer and this year I am nominated for best art and fashion director. In 2024 I was also fortunate to design an exclusive garment for the artist feid. Now my company and I are expanding and betting on the biggest, I came to live in the United States because I obtained my American residency and now my company works both in Colombia and here! Fashion is for me my way of expressing myself, a form of communication as well as our personal style💗 (a bit summarized everything)

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Of course it hasn’t been an easy road, but I’ve been very blessed in my process. I’ve been very fortunate to connect with incredible people who have believed in me and my work, and I’ve also been blessed to find projects with which I’ve been able to exploit my talent! But not everything was rosy. Wanting to be different, to dress differently in a city where there is a lot of drug culture, where people will judge you by your clothes, was complex, but I always gave my best and I was always myself.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a fashion designer and fashion stylist, I specialize in circular fashion, everything that is upcycling, giving a new life or a new use to the clothes that we no longer use. How to make a vest out of two pants. I am very proud of everything I have achieved and the name I left in my city, 2 of the best universities in my city (San Buenaventura University and Icesi University) have invited me to talks and university events as a guest designer in the city, I also had the good fortune of being a special guest at the Manuela Beltrán University in Bucaramanga, for the students of the last semester of fashion design. I have made all kinds of garments from a gala dress, a tailor to super urban clothes, and giant suits! What sets me apart from others is that I am a girl passionate about what she does and always tries to give her best!

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
One of the most important things for me is that my clients and I are always satisfied with their looks or clothes, that they find that personal style or that the people who wear my clothes feel more confident about themselves and the message they want to convey through their style.
