Today we’d like to introduce you to Bradley Kerschensteiner
Hi Bradley, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I have been a licensed psychotherapist in Miami for the past 20 years. I completed my graduate studies at a very progressive, integrative psychology program in San Francisco, California that blended Eastern and Western modalities to health and healing. My selection of this program stemmed from my deep interest in contemplative traditions like Buddhism and Eastern philosophy which I studied for a semester during my undergraduate work in south India. I was always interested in world religions, philosophy, literature, and psychology and so it made sense to study psychology formally at the graduate level.
After San Francisco, I then moved to Miami in 2003 where I worked for three years as a clinician at a private drug rehab center which helped me cut my clinical teeth with a very challenging client population. I also began to get burned out, as is common in working in these settings.
Thankfully, another door opened. I was very fortunate to then become the lead Life & Executive Coach at the renowned Canyon Ranch Health & Wellness property in Miami Beach for seven years. Honestly, this was a dream job for any practitioner. I had the great opportunity to work in a beautiful high-end health resort on the ocean with a stellar team of integrative practitioners treating clients were savvy, global consumers of health and wellness services.
It was during my tenure at Canyon Ranch that I began working intensely with Executives across different industries from all over the world on the many leadership challenges that they face. It was here that I found my sweet spot, created a great network of colleagues and clients. After Canyon Ranch, I transitioned into full-time private practice. Although I see clients for traditional psychotherapy services, my primary focus is providing Executive Coaching and Corporate Training services with clients both locally and worldwide.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Fortunately, I have always had good luck and opportunities along my professional path. The biggest struggle was seeing past the traditional career trajectory of the typical therapist/psychologist and doing something about it.
I knew what I didn’t want: be underpaid and overworked in a hospital or rehab setting, deal with insurance billing and managed care, build someone else’s brand, and not have flexibility in my schedule or work/life balance. I saw so many colleagues getting burned out, stuck in clinical settings that weren’t paying them for what they are worth, or struggling to make a living in private practice.
These concerns were a big part of what motivated me to build my Executive Coaching and Consulting practice. It was scary initially to take such a dramatic turn in my practice because there was really no playbook for this, but I had the right professional and personal support around me as well as amazing clients who I had the opportunity to help and helped me grow my practice.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I specialize in helping improving organizations improve three interdependent areas: leadership, team effectiveness, and company culture.
1:1 Executive Coaching
Executive Coaching involves working with senior leaders and management to improve leadership skills. I also provide Executive Coaching to help clients improve work performance, communication, navigate role transitions, motivation, complete personality and 360 Feedback Assessments, and career transition challenges.
Team Trainings
Additionally, I help teams improve their skills through training programs including: leadership and management skills, personality styles in the workplace, emotional intelligence, stress management and burnout prevention, high-performance teams, and conflict management skills. I also provide intensive trainings and retreat facilitation for organizations like Young Presidents and Entrepreneurs Organization.
Strategic Consulting
Finally, I provide consulting services to help companies in a range of areas, including: creating and implementing strategic plans, defining the Vision and Core Values, implementing goal-setting systems, developing Succession Management plans, developing talent assessment retention strategies and improving overall employee work performance and motivation.
My services are unique for several reasons. First of all, I provide a broad range of consulting and Executive Coaching services whereas many coaches hyper-focus on certain areas and. I can fluidly shift from discussing leadership skills to sticky management challenges to more high-level strategic planning. Secondly, I provide really practical tools, assessments, and guidance so my clients can see real progress in real-time. Finally, I am affordable, especially compared to big consulting firms so the price is not a barrier to getting good counsel.
I am most proud of having really strong, long-term relationships with my clients.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I found that networking both in and out of your comfort zone is ideal. Health practitioners, consultants and coaches aren’t always the best business people and they tend to only associate with people similar to themselves. I found that joining multiple groups, knowing trustworthy professionals across industries and most importantly being willing to help others is key to success and growing a practice. For ten years I also ran my own networking group for health professionals to help them develop personal and referral relationships.
