Today we’d like to introduce you to Christian Jarquin
Hi Christian, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My name is Dr. Christian Jarquin. I have several advanced degrees, but it has not always been this way. I am the youngest of seven children of a single mother. I got to the U.S. in a car tire crossing the Rio Grande. The blessing of my struggles has allowed me connect with all types of learners. My experiences have allowed me to create Mighty Math Champions, an SAT/ACT tutoring company. Through fire, I have learned methodologies that help high school students raise their test scores, so they too can enter top universities. I work on the whole person when I coach my students. My methods focus on test anxiety reduction, best test taking strategies, and future proofing each child. I serve students from Pinecrest, Coral Gables, Kendall, and North Miam Beach, who have a genuine desire to raise their scores and be a better version of themselves. My work speaks for itself. Students like Ana, who after my teaching methods, increased her ACT scores to a 34. This was a nine point increase from when we started. My holistic focused tutoring and coaching style helped Ana qualify and obtain a $350,000 scholarship to Pomona College, a top liberal arts college. The study tactics I teach go beyond test taking and can be applied to learning in general and to improving overall grades. I want to make learning fun again.
I wear the mantle of a serial entrepreneur- an individual who not only embraces philanthropy, but also dances on the edges of societal change. My purpose is to provide educational programs that unlock the latent potential and creative talents within each learner. My life has been a testament to perpetual learning. I have a masters degree in Mathematics and Statistics. I then earned a position as a college professor while earning my doctoral degree in Curriculum and Education. I’ve always harbored a desire to learn and teach to unite people and organizations in pursuit of collective good. I’ve succeeded at this. As a college student, I birthed a nonprofit organization, December of Dreams. I’ve shared our vision and our audacious dreams with unbridled passion with anyone willing to listen. Sororities, fraternities, honor societies, and college departments all felt my enthusiasm. We graced the news, radio waves, magazines, and newspapers. Fundraisers fueled our small non-profit, allowing us to ship those vital supplies to Nicaragua. Together with a dedicated team of fellow students and advisors, we touched the lives of over 10,000 children in Nicaragua, ensuring they received Christmas toys and essential school supplies. Our website is testament to this. Please visit www.decemberofdreams.org.
My resilience came from my mother. When the freight forwarder failed to deliver eight hefty boxes of toys and school materials to their intended city, my mom and I embarked on an adventure. Picture this: public transportation, haggling, and bus drivers who seemed to say “no” in every language. Yet my mom never wavered. She negotiated tirelessly, undeterred by the chaos. That experience etched into my soul the importance of persistence, even when met with a chorus of rejection and raised voices.
Additionally, my mom’s unwavering faith taught me humility. In every endeavor, I seek divine guidance, protection, and blessings for His glory and the betterment of humanity. When my time comes to depart this world, I’ll leave behind a softer, kinder, and more educated memory. I hope my children inherit not just love but also a healthy fear of God—a reverence that fuels their growth. Perhaps they’ll become social entrepreneurs, weaving positive change into the fabric of their lives and communities. I hope that my educational companies will continue to customize learning experiences, echoing the transformative impact of the Jarquin method.
As a life coach, I’ve witnessed lives blossom. Educational goals achieved, hearts healed from fear, and hope in learning rekindled. My companies thrive because they deliver massive and customized value to our students and their families. Personally, I’m mastering the art of dance and strumming melodies on my guitar. My travels have woven a tapestry of true friendships across the globe, arms wide open to welcome my family and I.🌎🤗
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I was born in Nicaragua during a civil war. My mother, fearing for the lives of her seven children, decided to emigrate to the U.S. despite not knowing what would lay ahead. Putting her trust in God, she took four of my siblings with her first and left me with my two teenage sisters. She sent us money to get on a plane to Guatemala after a few months. We flew to Guatemala to have a smuggler take the money, only to abandon us. We were later kidnapped for over a year. Our kidnappers hired a maid with the money my mom sent them. Her job was to keep us in line. My mom was asked for more and more money until we finally could leave and find another smuggler, who took us through Mexico by bus. The Mexican police stopped the bus and asked several people to get out. One of those people was my sister. She told the police she was not staying in his country but heading north. She added that she had no money. He took pity on her, and let her get back on the bus. Fear and uncertainty lay with us in every corner.
When we reached the border, we were told to leave our belongings, as we had to cross the Rio Grande on a tire. As a six-year-old who loved his toys, I refused. “I am staying with my toys, you go!” I yelled. My sister threw my beloved toys into a nearby bush and grabbed me, kicking and screaming into a tire. We had to cross. When we got to the other side the smuggler told us, “Welcome to the United States, where all dreams are possible.” It turns out he was right.
I went to elementary school not speaking a word of English. I was made fun of by my classmates, but my mom encouraged me to try and never give up. I did just that. I graduated top of my high school class and my university. The road was not easy. Growing up in the poorest neighborhoods in Miami, I experienced gang violence and bullying. Our family had no legal documents. We were scared of everyone, even the police. My mom worked three jobs to maintain her children. We mostly ate milk and bread. College was out of reach. Thank God that the NACARA law was passed by Congress that allowed me to enter college as a permanent resident with in-state tuition and full scholarships. I would have not been able to afford tuition as an out-of-state student or without being able to work. After college, I earned my U.S. Citizenship, a master’s degree in mathematics, and then a doctorate from the University of Florida. These were the highest achievements ever for my family. Coming to a country with nothing, I now have a terminal degree and am a full-time college professor.
