Today we’d like to introduce you to Kamaljit Kaur, M.D.
Hi Kamaljit, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi! I’d like to thank you for inviting me to speak about my passion and highlight my journey to your readers. I am a Double Board-Certified Primary Care Physician who has spent the last 12 years cultivating my passion for primary care.
I believe in giving my Patients the education, guidance, and time they deserve to ensure that they are, not only, preventing and treating illness, but optimizing their quality of life as well. It has been my past experiences working in the insurance-based healthcare system that have molded my Practice philosophies to what they are today with a focus that is, truly, on my Patients – not the insurance companies’ bottom line.
This all stems from my love of science and innate desire to help others.
If it wasn’t while playing with a “doctor kit” in kindergarten, then it was most certainly during biology class in elementary school that I realized I wanted to hone in on this area of study. With an ultimate goal in mind, I spent the rest of my school years taking classes & engaging in experiences that focused on the human body, its inner workings, how it all works and how a person can be so impacted by their health; negatively or positively.
The fuel for this fire came from my loving and supportive parents, who believed that I could achieve my goals and gave me the foundation of support to do so. Growing up an only child, I was very close with both my Mother & Father, but most certainly was a “daddy’s girl.” This is, perhaps, why losing my Father to cancer in my 2nd year of medical school devastated me – to say the least. My cheerleader was gone. If it wasn’t for the relentless love and support from my Mom, I likely would not have continued…but I did.
With the unwavering support of my family & friends, I picked myself up and got back on track to fulfill a dream that was not just mine but my Dad’s as well.
After medical school graduation, I received post-graduate training in Family Medicine at Virtua Health in New Jersey. With that, came a whole other set of challenges; including snow. Having been in South Florida since the age of 4, New Jersey was certainly a weather and culture shock for me. However, it was also some of the best years. After completing the rigorous training program, I moved back home to South Florida and joined the prestigious Cleveland Clinic Florida as a Staff Physician – a dream of mine since I was 14.
Over the last 9 years, I have worked in two of South Florida’s most reputable healthcare organizations; Cleveland Clinic Florida & Baptist Health South Florida. I have even held leadership positions at the latter. However, as wonderful as these experiences were, I felt something was missing; true, unhindered patient care.
After years of contemplation and trying to create a model that would serve my patients best, I opened KKaur MD in February of 2024. My primary goal: to provide Patients with personalized, readily-accessible and transparent primary care outside of the obstacles of health insurance.
By maintaining a direct, membership-based practice & eliminating the “middle-man”, my Patients and I are able to bypass insurance-based obstacles & inconveniences. More importantly, this allows me to deliver healthcare the way it should be with a focus on the patient – not the bottom line. While I do encourage that my patients maintain at least some insurance coverage (i.e. for unexpected hospitalizations and surgeries), my aim is to minimize this burden through included services. I hope to provide Patients with evidence-based, up-to-date healthcare with the vibe of “yesteryears”: wholesome, honest, and readily accessible.
Though I spend the majority of my time fine tuning my skills, I do also like to have fun. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, painting, traveling and, most of all, spending time with loved ones. My philosophy is “life is too short – laugh often and love fiercely.”
I am happily married to my Husband, Vick, who supports and inspires me every day.”
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Oh, not at all – for instance:
– Lost my Father to Cancer in the middle of my 2nd year of Med School.
– Took the following year off to manage the family business, be there for my grieving Mom and prepare to take the first of 3 Med School Board Exams the following year.
– Moved away from home and spent the following 2 years traveling alone throughout the Country to attend various clinical training institutions (in Med School.)
– Most recently, taking a financial risk; from my savings and 401k to fund this dream Practice of mine.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am a Double Board Certified Primary Care Physician who aims to provide evidence-based primary care to the Community. My practice philosophy is rooted in being personable, compassionate and appropriately tenacious when it comes to healing my Patients.
I went into this to provide what is grossly lacking nowadays : unrushed, personable and accessible Primary Care.
The only way to achieve this is to break the shackles of Health Insurance & practice in a Direct Primary Care Practice. This is one in which the Physician contracts directly with the Patient – not with the Insurance Company. This is, essentially, a “cash only” type of Practice – but the Patient knows where their money is going (unlike with the Insurance Companies.)
Furthermore, in this model I am able to:
– Provide my cell phone number to Patients.
– Provide unrushed, hour-long appointments to my Patients.
– Provide on-site Labs without a “convenience fee” to my Patients.
– Provide a “one Patient at a time” ambience in the Clinic.
– Provide coordination of care (i.e. with Specialists, Hospitals, etc) to my Patients.
– Provide SAME/NEXT (business) Day appts to my Patients.
– …and More!
I am most proud of the fact that I am giving them the best care that I can – with the time and attention that they deserve.
Though I don’t work for the Insurance Companies, we can guide you on how to use your Insurance Benefits for additional services (i.e. if I order an MRI, if you have to have a Surgery, if you have to see a Specialist, etc.)
So, the Patients can still make use of their Insurance Benefits – I would just rather work for the Patient rather than, say, Humana, Cigna or United, etc (especially, since they often dictate when and how we can treat our Patients and this is not always in the best health interest of that Patient.)
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Cheerleader, Supporter, Mentors – and other similar adjectives can be attributed to my Parents and my Husband.
I have had professional Mentors along the way as well : Professors, Supervisors and even Colleagues.
I also have an entourage of friends who have provided immense moral support.
