Daily Inspiration: Meet Alex Heron

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Heron

Hi Alex, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Being born and raised in a small town in Maryland, I always found myself drawn to music ever since I could remember. I started my musical journey learning the trumpet at 8, then the guitar at 10, and now I’d argue I can play almost every instrument at a decent level. At around 14 though, I found myself absolutely submerged in the intricacies of music production. I would spend almost every night watching Hip-Hop producers like Nick Mira and Metro Boomin produce.

After graduating high school, I upped my roots and moved to Boca Raton to get a degree in sociology at FAU. However, my musical journey all changed at 20 when I went to my first ever EDM Festival, Forbidden Kingdom. I remember being absolutely infatuated with this new style of music I heard and started doing what I did with music production when I was younger. I dove head first into research on the EDM scene, the culture, the backgrounds, and especially how to DJ. I remember watching a couple tutorials on “how to DJ” through pure curiosity and it just came naturally to me. But all music has come naturally so I had no idea what my future held for me in the realm of DJing. I remember getting my first DJ controller and spending about every waking second for a week straight learning how. The following week I got my first gig at a college bar in Boca Raton. That was almost 4 years ago and it feels like an absolute blur from then to now. Since then, I have been refining my DJ skills week in and week out and am at a constant battle with myself, always feeling the need to improve.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I think the question of, “has it been a smooth road?” is definitely subjective, and my answer changes depending on my perspective. From an objective and outside perspective of my road to today, I would argue that yes, it has been pretty smooth. Just seems like an average experience of a person in my opinion. However, from an internal perspective it has in no way been a smooth road. I would say my biggest struggle and the thing that I personally believe is the most important battle to improve your career as a DJ, is feeling like you’re not improving and plateauing. As a DJ, it’s hard not to look and compare yourself to the top 1%. That’s where we all want to be. I think it is not easy to recognize the goals and achievements you have accomplished in a career that is so competitive.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I perform as a DJ at clubs and events basically anywhere I am capable of. I don’t think I really “specialize” in one particular subcategory of DJing. I am pretty much a jack of all trades and am extremely versatile with my DJing abilities so I’d argue that could be something I am known for. Other than DJing however, I also produce melodic house music similar to artists like Sonny Fodera, John Summit, Kream, Etc. Most people know me for DJing at clubs but I want to change that rhetoric and be someone known globally for my music. I am most proud of my music and my discipline and ethics when it comes to being a DJ. In about 4 years of DJing shows, I have missed/been late to almost no shows at all. I think my versatility sets me apart from others. I also think that my innate musical inclination could set me apart from others as well but that could be subjective.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I think the DJ/Producing Dance industry is making BIG changes and I definitely think it is where music could be heading soon. Over the past year I have seen HUGE artists like Drake, Taylor Swift, and Beyonce all start dipping their toes in Dance music. Coachella, one of the biggest music festivals in the US even booked EDM artists like Skrillex and Fredagain as a couple of their main headliners this past year.
