Exploring Life & Business with Joy Mowett-Fuller of Shenandoah Medical Care Center

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joy Mowett-Fuller

Joy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am a National Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner. My education initially started at the University Hospital of the West Indies school of Nursing in Kingston, Jamaica at the age of 17 years. I emigrated to the USA in 1988 to fill a need in Queens, New York for a nursing shortage. I later moved to Florida with my young family in 1992 and have since lived in Boynton Beach Florida. After working as an RN for about 15 years, i decided to return to school to continue my career, I completed my BSN and MSN as a family nurse practitioner within a 5 year period. After working as an NP for 10 years, my position was closed by a Pulmonary group I was working with, which lead to my starting my own practice in 2014 as a house call APRN and later moved to a brick and mortar clinic as an independent primary care provider. Shenandoah medical care center was officially launched in 2016. Has been in operation for the past 10 years. We offer primary care, weight loss and chronic disease management services, Direct Primay Care services (DPC).

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
This journey has not been a smooth process. Starting a practice as Family Nurse practitioner has been challenging primarily because most NP’s are not allowed the opportunity to be on all commercial health insurance plans, so reimbursements has been limited. As an independent practitioner, starting a practice after working in a hospital setting for over 20 years was a huge shift, but with God’s help and guidance, encouragement/advice from other providers has proven to be beneficial.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Shenandoah Medical Care Center?
