Conversations with Sophia Mullins

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophia Mullins

Hi Sophia, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Growing up in rural Ohio, I always dreamed of New York City. From a young age, the idea of the bustling streets and vibrant energy captivated me, inspiring me to work hard in school. This dedication paid off when I was named valedictorian of my high school and received a full-tuition scholarship to Ohio State University. As a first-generation college student from a single-parent household, this achievement filled me with pride.

My primary goal was to move to New York City, and I quickly realized that finance was a great pathway to making that dream a reality. When I arrived at OSU, I discovered the exciting opportunities on Wall Street, which offered a path to be intellectually stimulated while earning enough to cover the city’s high cost of living. From that point on, I immersed myself in the world of finance, getting involved in various student organizations and taking on as many investment banking internships as I could to prepare for a career in NYC’s finance industry.

In 2017, I took the leap and moved to New York City to begin my journey as an Investment Banking Analyst at a major bank. I thrived in the fast-paced environment, but I soon noticed a concerning trend: a prevalent mindset in the finance world that seemed to pit hard work against well-being. This didn’t sit right with me; I had learned from experience that prioritizing health enhances both personal and professional success. In search of like-minded individuals, I found inspiration in a quote: “If something you’re searching for doesn’t exist, create it.” That’s when I decided to start Wall Street Wellness.

While grappling with the stresses and demanding lifestyle of the finance world that I was engrossed in, I began experiencing some puzzling health symptoms. After two years and many doctor visits, I was labeled a “medical mystery” by my healthcare team. Feeling a bit lost, I turned to functional medicine, encouraged by friends who had positive experiences. During my second appointment with my functional doctor, I received a diagnosis of Hashimoto’s, a somewhat common autoimmune disease affecting the thyroid.

With the support of my functional doctor, I started a holistic health plan focusing on lifestyle changes—like going gluten-free and managing stress. To my surprise, a few months later, my thyroid levels showed significant improvement. My Hashimoto’s antibodies had vanished into remission, and I felt my symptoms fading away. This experience opened my eyes to the power of functional and lifestyle medicine and the vital role our habits play in our overall health.

Since then, I’ve developed a genuine passion for holistic well-being, exploring topics like nutrition, movement, mental health, stress management, spirituality, and personal development. Through Wall Street Wellness, I share how I integrate realistic wellness practices into a busy career. Since my time in investment banking, I’ve held roles in private equity, hedge funds, and venture capital, moving to Miami with a private equity firm in 2022.

As I navigated my journey, I also became more open about mental health on my platform, sharing my own experiences with therapy and overcoming burnout. Looking back, I’m thankful that I chose to start connecting with others through those vulnerable topics, as it has created a deeper connection with my Wall Street Wellness community, allowing driven individuals to find support in prioritizing their well-being alongside their professional ambitions.

In July 2024, I made the decision to resign from my role in private equity to focus on my work in wellness full-time. After much self reflection, I realized that my purpose is to help others who are seeking to balance the pressures of the corporate world. I’m currently pursuing courses to become a board-certified holistic nutritionist, as well as a board-certified health and wellness coach. I also enjoy building community through events, which I’ve hosted in both Miami and NYC, engaging in partnerships with brands such as Equinox.

My full-time career in wellness is just beginning, but my goal is clear: I am determined to leverage my decade of experience in finance to help others find balance, harmonizing well-being with ambition so they can live their most vibrant lives.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road hasn’t always been easy, but each challenge has brought important insights. Moving from Ohio to New York City was a big adjustment, and I quickly realized the need to balance the intense demands of the finance industry with my well-being.

My health journey was another pivotal moment. After years of puzzling symptoms, I turned to functional medicine, which ultimately led to an autoimmune diagnosis that helped me reclaim my health. This experience taught me the importance of advocating for oneself and seeking the right support, as well as the value of lifestyle changes and their impact on overall health.

Additionally, being open about my mental health and burnout experiences with the Wall Street Wellness community felt vulnerable at times, but it ultimately allowed me to connect with others on a deeper level.

Overall, these challenges have not only strengthened my resilience but also fueled my commitment to wellness. I’m now more passionate than ever about helping others find realistic balance in their lives, turning struggles into opportunities for growth and connection.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

My mission is to help individuals navigate the often high-pressure environment of the corporate world while prioritizing their well-being.

I’m known for creating practical, relatable content that helps professionals integrate wellness into their busy lives. This includes sharing personal experiences and strategies I’ve used to overcome challenges, which resonates with many in my community.

What I’m most proud of is building a supportive community where people feel empowered to prioritize their health alongside their career ambitions. I love hosting wellness events and collaborating with brands like Equinox to foster connections and inspire positive change.

My journey has equipped me with both the knowledge and empathy needed to guide others in finding their own balance and living vibrant lives.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
One surprising thing most people don’t know about me is that I’m a huge foodie! I absolutely love exploring new cultures through their food. To me, sharing a meal is one of the best ways to connect with people. Whether I’m trying street food in a new city or hosting a casual dinner with friends, there’s just something special about food that brings everyone together.

I’m all about discovering unique dishes and the stories behind them, and I love hunting for local gems when I travel. Sharing those experiences makes trying new flavors even more fun. So, while I’m big on wellness, I also believe in the joy of enjoying food together and celebrating the diverse cultures that come with it. It’s all part of living life to the fullest!
