Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Mustelier
Hi Jessica, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Growing up, I was always captivated by two things: science and teeth. Visiting my childhood dentist was always a pleasant experience; his joy and enthusiasm were truly inspiring and sparked my desire to pursue a career in dentistry. I saw firsthand how dentistry offers a fulfilling balance between providing essential healthcare and maintaining a rewarding work-life balance.
My journey began with an accelerated science program starting in 7th grade, and by my senior year of high school, I was already gaining hands-on experience through a work-study program at a dental office. After graduating from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) in 2019, I embarked on my professional career. I initially worked in a general dentistry practice in Pinecrest. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I transitioned to a private practice in Coral Gables, where I continue to work today.
Over the course of my career, I have witnessed a significant evolution in my practice, shifting from a focus primarily on general dentistry to concentrating on implant dentistry. This transition has profoundly impacted my ability to transform my patients’ lives.
Every experience I’ve had—from early science classes to shadowing my family dentist—has played a crucial role in shaping who I am today.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey to dentistry was anything but straightforward; it was more like a winding path up a mountain, culminating in a breathtaking view. After graduating from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, I immediately applied to dental schools. Although I received a few interviews, I wasn’t accepted. Facing this setback, I moved to Miami and began teaching middle school science.
After two years of teaching, I realized I need to return to my dream, which was to work in the dental field. I transitioned to working as a surgical assistant for a local periodontist in Miami, to make sure this is what I wanted prior to going to dental school. During this time I continued to take science classes: anatomy, microbiology, and others. However, my path took another unexpected turn when I was recruited by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as a research chemist. This was an offer I couldn’t refuse. Moving to Atlanta, I worked in the CDC’s Emergency Response and Air Toxicants Branch for three years.
Upon returning to Miami, I immediately enrolled in the dental hygiene program at Miami Dade College and met some incredible instructors who started to shape me into the clinician I am today. During this time, my life also changed dramatically: I got married in my first year and welcomed my son at the end of my second year. Despite the challenges of studying with a newborn, I successfully prepared to retake the dental school entrance exam, achieving an exceptional score.
In the fall of 2015, I was admitted to LECOM School of Dental Medicine, and in 2019, my dream of becoming a dentist finally came to fruition. Every twist and turn in my journey has led me to where I am today, and I am deeply grateful for the experiences that have shaped my career. This perseverance and unwillingness to give up on my dreams is now something that I try to instill on any one I mentor.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a general dentist with two fellowships in Implantology. My practice encompasses all aspects of general dentistry, with a particular focus on implant-related procedures such as extractions, bone grafting, and dental implant placement. In addition to my clinical work, I serve as a Key Opinion Leader and Advisory Board member for 3D Predict, an aligner company.
One of my greatest priorities is ensuring that my patients feel at ease when they visit my office. I understand that many people have a natural apprehension about dental visits, particularly when they’ve come in with pain. I take pride in my ability to help alleviate that anxiety by actively listening and working collaboratively to develop treatment plans that address their dental health goals. Education is also a key component of my approach, as I strive to inform them about proper oral health practices.
My personal motto is “Everyone deserves a smile they can be proud of.” Whether it’s perfecting a patient’s smile with subtle adjustments or undertaking a comprehensive full-mouth rehabilitation, my mission is to help individuals radiate confidence. I’m genuinely grateful that patients entrust me with their dental care, allowing me to play a role in their journey to a renewed smile.
What sets me apart is my unwavering commitment to patient satisfaction and my deep sense of compassion. I take the time to truly listen to my patients, ensuring their experience at the dental office is as smooth and pleasant as possible. This dedication doesn’t stop with me—I instill a positive mindset in my team, fostering a collaborative environment where every member’s contribution is valued. This collective effort creates a warm, cohesive atmosphere that our patients appreciate and enjoy.
What’s next?
As a Key Opinion Leader for 3D Predict, I have the privilege of lecturing on cutting-edge cases where I’ve integrated their aligners with advanced implantology techniques. Sharing these experiences and insights with fellow dentists is something I find immensely rewarding. The opportunity to educate and engage with the professional community fuels my passion and drives me to continuously explore and push the boundaries of what’s possible in our field.
Looking ahead, I’m excited to continue this journey of knowledge-sharing and to mentor recent graduates. Transitioning from student to practitioner can be daunting, and I’m dedicated to providing the support and guidance that can make a real difference in their early careers. I believe that nurturing new talent is crucial for the evolution and future of dentistry.
I am also enthusiastic about collaborating with like-minded clinicians who are equally committed to innovation. Together, we can drive advancements and elevate the standard of care. Ultimately, my goal is to help shape the future of dentistry by not only advancing my own practice but also by fostering growth and development within our vibrant dental community.
