Rising Stars: Meet Marta Sesmero of Miami

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marta Sesmero

Hi Marta, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My story begins in Zaragoza, Spain, where I was born and raised. I pursued my undergraduate studies in Business Management and Administration, which laid the groundwork for my interest in the world of commerce and trade. During my university years, I was eager to gain international experience, so I spent my summers working in Ireland and England, immersing myself in different cultures and learning valuable lessons in adaptability and communication. I also had the opportunity to study abroad for a semester in the Netherlands through a university exchange program, which broadened my perspectives on business and international relations.

After completing my undergraduate studies, I worked in market research consulting, where I developed a keen interest in understanding market dynamics and consumer behavior. This experience fueled my desire to deepen my knowledge, leading me to pursue a master’s degree in international business management at the Centro de Estudios Económicos y Empresariales in Madrid. This advanced education provided me with a comprehensive understanding of global trade dynamics and strategic business management.

In 2007, I moved to the United States, where I began to specialize in market research and international business. This transition was both challenging and rewarding, as it required me to adapt my skills to a new cultural and economic environment. Based in Miami, Florida, I have honed my critical thinking and marketing skills, working closely with a diverse range of industries and institutions.

Today, I focus on promoting and facilitating bi-lateral trade between foreign countries and the United States. My work encompasses a wide range of activities, including conducting in-depth market research, writing articles and press releases, coordinating events, and developing trade missions. These experiences have deepened my understanding of international trade and fueled my passion for building strong business relationships.

In addition to my professional achievements, I treasure my family life, being married and the proud mother of two wonderful children. Recently, I launched my own baby clothes brand, Joey’s Closet, which focuses on sustainability and high-quality hypoallergenic cotton. This venture has been an exciting new chapter in my career, allowing me to apply my expertise to create a brand that reflects my values.

Looking back, my career has been a blend of strategic learning, practical application, and continuous adaptation to the ever-changing global market. It’s been a journey of growth and discovery, one that I’m proud of and eager to continue.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road hasn’t always been smooth, and like many professional journeys, mine has had its share of challenges. Moving to the United States was a significant transition. Adapting to a new cultural and economic environment required a lot of flexibility and resilience. It wasn’t always easy to navigate the differences in business practices and market dynamics, but these experiences ultimately broadened my perspective and strengthened my adaptability.

Additionally, starting my own baby clothes brand, Joey’s Closet, while managing a demanding career and family life, presented its own set of hurdles. Finding the right balance between these professional and personal commitments requires careful planning and a lot of perseverance.

Despite these challenges, each obstacle has been a learning opportunity. They have contributed to my growth and have reinforced my commitment to both my career and personal passions.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in understanding market dynamics and fostering business relationships, which enables me to bridge gaps between different markets and create opportunities for growth. I’m particularly proud of the impact my efforts have had on increasing trade visibility and fostering economic collaboration between regions.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
The Covid-19 crisis reinforced the importance of adaptability, especially as we transitioned to virtual meetings and remote work. It became clear that staying flexible is essential for navigating sudden changes. At the same time, I realized that maintaining strong relationships with partners and clients is vital; clear communication and mutual trust helped us through these challenging times. Most importantly, the crisis reaffirmed that my well-being and family are the center of my life. Prioritizing these aspects is not just a necessity but a guiding principle that shapes my approach to both personal and professional challenges.
