Conversations with Stephanie Fernandez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Fernandez

Hi Stephanie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a born and raised Miamian, I always hated the notion that this city was superficial—dare I say, even dumb. But that couldn’t be further from the truth. Miami is a city teeming with culture, art, and expression in a way I’ve truly never seen anywhere else.

For nearly 20 years, I’ve worked at Books & Books – a Miami institution and hotbed for intellectual freedom – putting books and knowledge into the hands of our community and fueling the vibrant life I see on a daily basis. Inspired by this opportunity, I wanted to create something that brought people together in a fun, challenging way, where brains could battle and friendships could flourish. Miami is more than just a backdrop—it’s the heart of my journey, and I’m passionate about building connections through the lively, smart, and welcoming atmosphere of our trivia nights.

Back in 2019, I began my first trivia nights at one of my favorite Miami-grown neighborhood bars, Jada Coles. It was there where I began to grow connections and perfected the right kind of game catered to the audience. Learning what topics excited the bar goers became my specialty. The idea of sharing knowledge over a few beers was a dream come true.

Through the loving support of friends, family, and the community, before I knew it, Superfly Trivia was born. I started to expand by connecting with other Miami based organizations and businesses further growing the community. Today, I am proud to say I host hundreds of trivia enthusiasts a month at several locations around town. Superfly Trivia continues to grow and I plan to build a team of dedicated hosts that will make Miami smarter – one dive bar at a time!

Why the name Superfly?

In the summer of 2020, when seeing anyone outside of your “covid bubble” was frowned upon, I started to help my furloughed dad build none other than a bar out of discarded pallets in our backyard. We spent days driving nails into the walls and laying out beer bottle caps to create the right aesthetic all while listening to rock ballads and of course watching Jeopardy in the background. One day, an unlucky and bold fly landed right in the center of our bar top just as we were laying out the epoxy glue and he was forever cemented on our bar top.

After some laughs we named our little hangout THE SUPERFLY. That summer, will forever live in my memory bank. Little did we know, Superfly would become a family name.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
For the most part, it really has been a smooth road. I never considered myself a “host” so, it took me a little time to let go of my inhibitions. If you would’ve told me 5 years ago that I would be telling jokes and shamelessly rounding up a room full of trivia fans on a microphone I would’ve said NO WAY.

I guess some times, it’s about believing in the possibility of creating something from nothing.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Comparable to Miami itself, I consider myself a jack of all trades. Networking and colliding worlds is my specialty. I am proud to say that community building through unique ways has been something I really have focused on. The idea of turning people onto new things outside of their scope is right up my alley. My trivia themes and categories at times reflect that.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
If there is one thing that I know will never go out of style it’s the joy of hanging out at your neighborhood bar or favorite venue space. In the next few years, a goal of mine is to become a brand that Miami recognizes no matter what part of town you are in. To collaborate with several groups and businesses around Miami to somehow connect everyone no matter what their background is. One of the things I’ve learned (and love the most) is that everyone has a specialty, everyone has something to offer, everyone has random knowledge to share.

Not to mention, everyone loves to show how smart they are 🙂
