Today we’d like to introduce you to Marian Quintero
Hi Marian, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m the child of hardworking Venezuelan immigrants who taught me the value of perseverance and the belief that I could achieve anything I set my mind to. This mindset shaped my academic journey, where I excelled in high school due to my dedication and commitment to my studies.
My path to becoming a lawyer was shaped significantly by my experiences early in my career. After college, I encountered some challenging situations at my first job where I was wronged. This experience made it clear to me that I needed to become a lawyer—not only to protect myself but also to advocate for others who might be mistreated or taken advantage of within the system.
Driven by this newfound purpose, I attended law school and focused on specializing in intellectual property law, a field that intrigued me despite its niche nature. Without any existing connections in this area, I relied on networking and persistent efforts to make my way into the field. My hard work paid off, and I eventually secured a position practicing intellectual property law, where I continue to thrive and pursue my passion.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road hasn’t been smooth, but the support from my family and loved ones has made the journey more manageable and enjoyable. Learning the best ways to approach issues and understanding what to say or do were essential growing pains that helped me become adaptable in various environments.
I recall sharing my struggles with a confidante who told me, “If it were easy, everyone would do it.” This insight became my mantra whenever I encountered challenges, reminding me that overcoming difficulties was part of the journey toward achieving my goals.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am an intellectual property litigation attorney and content creator, specializing in protecting the rights of creative professionals. One of my proudest achievements is representing award-winning photographers, with whom I’ve built strong, successful relationships. Each new case feels like solving a complex puzzle, and I relish the challenge of devising the best strategy to address each unique issue.
As I began introducing myself as an attorney, I often encountered surprise from people who didn’t expect me to be in this profession. Intrigued by this reaction, I discovered that Latina women represent only about 2% of the 1.3 million attorneys in the U.S., according to the American Bar Association. This underrepresentation likely contributes to the lack of visibility and preconceived notions about what a lawyer looks like.
Determined to change this narrative and inspire others, I created the digital persona “IPgirly,” with “IP” standing for intellectual property. Through this platform, I produce informative content on legal topics, share humorous anecdotes from my practice, and offer lifestyle insights. My videos started gaining traction, leading to media companies reaching out for permission to use my content. A particularly memorable moment was when Mitú, a leading digital media company with a diverse audience, featured a video of me being sworn in as an attorney.
One of my non-legal videos even went viral, amassing over 1.7 million views. What sets me apart is my commitment to authenticity and resilience. I’ve faced skepticism and criticism—people doubted I could become a lawyer and dismissed my online presence as trivial. Yet, I’ve proven that staying true to oneself and pursuing one’s vision can lead to remarkable success. My message to anyone reading this is clear: if you have a vision for your life, pursue it with conviction. You can achieve it.
How do you think about luck?
I believe that hard work and luck go hand in hand. While I am dedicated to putting in the effort, I’ve also been fortunate to find opportunities along the way. However, it’s crucial to position yourself in the right places to attract luck and be prepared to capitalize on opportunities when they arise.
I make it a habit to express gratitude for everything I achieve, recognizing that even what might seem like “bad luck” can be a valuable lesson. These challenges are often life’s way of teaching us important lessons. It’s essential to learn from these experiences the first time around so that life doesn’t keep presenting the same lessons.
