Hidden Gems: Meet Keisha Gaines of Keisha Cakes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keisha Gaines.

Keisha Gaines

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve had a love for art for as long as I can remember. I enjoyed it but didn’t think I could have a career creating it. I ended up studying video production at The Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale and working in that industry after graduation. In 2010 I was looking for something that would give me a bit more creative outlet after work so after expressing interest, my husband encouraged me to take a cake decorating class at our local craft store.

After the first class, I was hooked. I fell in love with the process of decorating a cake from start to finish. I posted my class projects on social media and as I improved my friends and family started inquiring if I was selling them. It was at this point that I realized I might have a business. I became so excited to be able to create edible art and be my own boss. From there l officially started my business and worked on my craft. I’ve been growing and glowing ever since.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road but what an entrepreneurial journey is. One of the struggles is having to bootstrap my business. It took years to build my inventory and purchase equipment. In the first few years, every cake I sold all the profits went right back into the business. Now being in a better position with growing clientele and increased revenue has allowed me to finally pay myself. Another challenge is beginning the process of building a great team.

For the longest, the business has just been me, myself & I. I have a lot to learn before hiring my first employee. Being well-educated before jumping into anything has been very important to me and the success of my business. I know I need to hire in order to scale my business and I’m hoping to find a few dedicated and enthusiastic individuals to help Keisha Cakes grow to the million-dollar business it can be.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
The qualities that I feel are most important to my success are perseverance, and the ability to connect with people. I say perseverance because as hard as it’s gotten in the past 13 years I have never given up. Don’t get me wrong I definitely took breaks, but I never threw in the towel and I’m proud of myself for that. I also think my ability to connect with others has helped build my brand awareness and advocacy.

I have walked into rooms where I don’t know anyone, but someone has either heard of me or tasted one of my products and will begin to share with others my accomplishments or how great my treats taste. That is an amazing feeling to know people are paying attention to all the hard work I put into my business and want to share. I truly enjoy building connections with people.
