Community Highlights: Meet Michelle Mora of Spillmug Coffee

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Mora.

Hi Michelle, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for sharing your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
My name is Michelle, and my business partner Juan decided to start our coffee brand 3 years ago. We came from Venezuela, and we never imagined that we would be working together because of our age gap.

We struggled a lot trying to find the perfect location, but we never gave up because no matter where we were, people remembered our name and our coffee; we knew Spillmug was starting to grow, and it was continually growing.

We started in the green-yellow farmers market, and right now, we are located in Smorgasburg Wynwood. We have been part of numerous events like the Miami Book Fair, SOBEWFF, and Wodapalloza.

Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road at all!

It has been really difficult for us to find a good location for our brand. Once, we were located in a location where people didn’t know more than Cafe Con Leche.

Another thing that happened recently is that my business partner had a stroke, and he is currently at the hospital. It was really hard to believe because he is only 23.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next, you can tell us a bit more about your business.
Spillmug is a coffee brand born and raised in Miami. Our beans are from Colombia. It was really hard to find the perfect bean that mixed well with our recipes, but we found it.

Spillmug was created by two people from 2 different generations. Juan is 23, and I am 29, so we both combined our perspectives of life, and we were able to create a menu and an image that can relate well to different generations.

Our menu has a little bit of everything so everybody can enjoy it. We’ are also part of the LGBTQ community, so we like to be involved in that part of ourselves. We are really proud of our name and logo since it’s really catchy and minimalist. We didn’t have this name at the beginning, but let’s say destiny made us change it, hahaha.

Our menu is 90% iced, and we offer a variety of milk options. Our best sellers are the dulce de leche iced coffee, Protein Iced Coffee, salted caramel iced coffee, Banana Bread Iced Latte, Pistachio Iced Latte, and Brown Butter Crumble Iced latte.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the COVID-19 crisis?
We started the company in December 2020, so we didn’t get hit by the pandemic as other local businesses did, unfortunately.

We did observe and learn from other businesses how they survived the pandemic, and they put a lot of weight on the social media team.
