Check Out Giselle Roca’s Story

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Giselle Roca.

Giselle Roca

Hi Giselle, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for sharing your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
My name is Giselle, the face and hands behind Tangled Words.

I started this small calligraphy business when I was still in high school, and it started as just a fun hobby. A friend reached out and asked me to design a sign for her photography business, and from then on, I started sharing my writing. Slowly, people started requesting signs for their baby showers, anniversaries, weddings, and so on.

It boosted my confidence, and since others believed in my talent, I went ahead and started promoting it. Now, I have been able to make endless seating charts, welcome signs, place cards, addressed envelopes, and so much more. I like being innovative and letting creativity shine. There are always others who have amazing ideas, and I love to support them all the way!

In the two years, I even got to work alongside a mural company and was hired by Dolce & Gabbana’s beauty team to help with their handwritten PR packages. It’s been a crazy and wonderful journey thus far!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not everything will be a walk in the park. I’ve had projects throughout my journey as a calligrapher that I thought would be simple tasks, but challenges would come out of where I least expected them to be. Something as simple as using the correct pen on a specific medium because you don’t want it to smear, wear off, or leak through.

Also, showing patience when working with clients, that not all may be understating or kind. Expectations are something we all have, and I try to meet them for my clients as best as possible. I’m thankful for the support I’ve had of my family and friends when feeling overwhelmed, they’ve been my right hand.

Being the only one capable of writing out these projects is a challenge because there are times when I get frustrated with myself or even scared to do something new. Those closest to me give me the extra push to let go of that fear and do it.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar with what you do, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Miami-based calligrapher. For those who don’t know what that may be, it is someone who specializes in handwriting and uses a variety of special tools and ink to create this ornamental penmanship on different mediums or objects. I’m known for my unique penmanship on seating charts or welcome signs for weddings.

There are a lot of details that go into weddings, and I love having a way to share my art for the occasion. Something like writing each guest’s name on an oyster shell or flower stem. I’m very proud of taking on a challenge, I’ve had the privilege of working with awesome wedding planners that have allowed me to get out of my shell and create unique and meaningful pieces. Recently, I got to make a seating chart and welcome sign for a bride on surfboards, along with each guest’s name on oyster shells. This has its challenges but it brought so much satisfaction once I completed it.

I believe what sets me apart from others is that I am very adamant about making the experience of working with me exciting and personal, that my clients feel comfortable with making requests, and that I accept suggestions as to what I believe would be best. My work shows my eye for detail. Something as simple as writing a letter differently makes all the difference to me, and I know my clients appreciate that.

Any big plans?
My plans for the future might take a shift as I am currently engaged and planning to get married in 2025. I’ll most likely be taking my work with me to a new state, Massachusetts since that’s where my fiancée is based. The best part of my style of work is that the wedding industry is worldwide, and I’m sure I’ll get to build a new clientele.

In the meantime, I hope to make more connections with bigger name brands where I could possibly work for them in unique events like live in person or creating designs for them to use and share with others. Miami is a busy city with constant changes and events, so a big goal is to reach out and make the right connections for further growth and business.
