Today we’d like to introduce you to Zander Brant.
Hi Zander, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
My first real photography introduction was in the 7th-grade elective class. We would go out and shoot a roll of film of mostly nature photos. Then return to the darkroom to develop the film. It was an adventurous discovery. I loved it. In my early twenties, my kids became my muses and I started photographing kids for talent agencies. Then adults.
Over the years I assisted many talented and award-winning photographers from whom I would take actions from their workflow that I liked, and incorporate them into mine. Freelancing I’ve been fortunate to photograph corporate, portraits, weddings, swim, sports, and products. Not really having a niche. Recently I’ve been photographing dogs more and really love them. I like beauty, but I love character.
All the dogs have great character. I’ve been fortunate to also hold employment at a landmark restaurant Southport Raw Bar. After years of management there it has allowed me the flexibility to book shoots as well as to work on personal photography projects. For me, photography is an art and very personal.
I’m nearing the end of finishing a personal project I’ve been working on for years. Inspired by Richard Avedon and the restaurant business. Today most of my photography is focused on weddings, dogs, and portraits. Either in the studio, at a venue, or using the beach, parks, and our beautiful environment as a terrific backdrop.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road along the way. There are always obstacles whether it’s personal relationships, family, friends, money, or confidence, it’s the same for everyone and for many situations. You have visions of where you think you should be. But there are trials and tribulations you go through. Takes more time than you think.
Dealing with the obstacles is what it’s about. Especially with photography because there are always hiccups during a wedding or a photo shoot. You have to figure it out on the fly. So many variables and elements involved. The experience gives you the confidence. I always say it’s photographing subjects while balancing chaos.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My photographic approach is a documentary style, capturing real natural moments while creating creative portraits with an editorial, dramatic edge. Specializing and most known for portraits, weddings, and dogs. I also draw and have had numerous art exhibitions of my artwork. I have to admit that I’m proud and honored to be asked to photograph such important moments and events. Images that will stand the test of time.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was somewhat of an introvert. We moved a bit so I changed schools often. I enjoyed drawing quite a bit. My dad put me in art classes. He thought I was going to be an architect. I would draw and design house plans all the time. I was into Hot Wheels and Star Wars at a young age. Then into skateboarding until I was 16 and got a car. Then I really discovered music. Started listening to all genres.
