Today, we’d like to introduce you to Julie Guy.
Hi Julie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started my radio career in 1991. I was born in Montreal, Canada to Italian immigrant parents and moved to South Florida when I was 5. We owned a motel on Hollywood Beach as well as an Italian bakery and deli. So, hard work was pressed upon me as a young child and formed a work ethic that never strayed. While in college, I applied for an internship at my favorite radio station which at the time was heritage rock station WSHE, ‘She’s Only Rock n Roll’. That internship lasted 2 years. I felt alive in that environment and did everything I could to learn and absorb all I could about the industry.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Is there ever an easy path? That wouldn’t make for a good story. There were so many struggles. Some are/were gender bias, pay inequity, egos, and in my case, finding the right chemistry with co-hosts. The biggest challenge personally is wondering if I connected with people. If what I had to say resonated. These days the buzz word is imposter syndrome.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am currently the morning co-host of THOSE 2 GIRLS in the MORNING on 1015 LITEFM. I like to think of it as being your friend on your way to work/dropping kids off at school etc. After 10 years of being on rock radio, I started my family and needed better hours and a different lifestyle. That was when I applied for a midday position at 973. The Coast. (at the time a popular AC station). I thought, this could be a perfect time slot and give me the flexibility to raise a family. The program director there decided I should host the morning show. I initially declined and said I had never done one before. (And I wasn’t keen on waking up before 4am.) He said he thought I had it in me. I don’t know why. But, I’m glad he did. It was the best decision I’ve ever made. Not only did it allow me to the perfect schedule for my family, but it pushed me to be more creative in the way I communicated. Speaking to an audience of women, required total honesty. And a completely different mind set. I had been accustomed to speaking to men and this was a breath of fresh air. As much as we hear that women are in competition with one another and love to tear each other down, I’ve found the reverse. If you allow yourself to be vulnerable and genuine, you would be surprised to see how many women will champion you! Whether I was discussing my babies who turned into teens who turned into young adults, or buying a home, or getting divorced, taking care of aging parents, or just the pains of getting older, I brought everyone along with me. I used to often think, (long before the actual movement) that the 2 most powerful words that bridged people together, were ME TOO. And ever since then relatability and honesty have been my super strength. I’m also blessed to have a wonderful human as my co-host, Tamara G. She is the perfect YING to my YANG and we share the same, morals, values and sensibilities. Further proof, that women CAN work together without ego and can lift one another up!
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I am an avid reader and love all things new age/spiritual. In terms of apps, it’s mostly your typical social media apps like IG, Facebook, and X. Everyday life provides plenty of fodder for scintillating conversation. I’m also very active in the community and volunteer a tremendous amount of time to so many wonderful organizations. BRCA strong, Suits, Stiletto and Lipstick, The Embrace Girls Foundation, Best Buddies, Dolphins Challenge Cancer and so many more.
Exercise is the most important tool for my sanity. I exercise daily. I’ve run several marathons and half marathons. Exercise keeps me sane, healthy, and most importantly awake! You would be hard-pressed to find me sitting still.
