Hi Gen, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey as a singer-songwriter began as soon as I could mumble words, I was surrounded by music my whole life. With my mom being a singer-songwriter and my dad accompanying her on the guitar. As I grew older, I found solace and self-expression in songwriting. It started with simple tunes and evolved as I gained more life experiences to draw from. Despite facing doubts and challenges along the way, I remained committed to my passion for music.
One pivotal moment that stands out is when I was 8 years old and had the opportunity to perform at an event in Miami called Calle Ocho. With no backing band, I took the stage and sang my heart out, receiving an enthusiastic response from the crowd. That experience solidified my love for performing and reinforced my desire to pursue a career in music.
Over the years, I continued writing and performing whenever I could. I encountered obstacles and setbacks, but each challenge only fueled my determination to succeed. Eventually, I made the decision to fully commit to my musical aspirations, even if it meant leaving behind other pursuits or facing criticism from others.
Through hard work, persistence, and a willingness to take risks, I began to see opportunities arise. From releasing my debut single to preparing for the launch of my EP, “Romanticizing,” I’ve embraced every step of the journey with gratitude and excitement. While the path to where I am now hasn’t always been easy, I believe that staying true to myself and my passion for music is key. And as I continue to grow and evolve as an artist, I’m excited to see where the future takes me.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I firmly believe that everyone experiences pivotal moments in their lives, instances where everything suddenly falls into place and change occurs swiftly and unexpectedly. While life has presented its share of challenges, I’ve been fortunate to have a supportive and close-knit family who have stood by me through thick and thin. As a first-generation American, I was raised in a household where hard work and determination were deeply ingrained values, providing me with the foundation to embrace my truest self.
However, there are always naysayers who dismiss our dreams as unrealistic. Interestingly, I’ve come to view such skepticism as a form of validation. I once lived a life colored by complacency, fear, and self-doubt. I found myself trapped in a job I despised, surrounded by people who championed practicality over passion. In those moments, even admitting that I was a singer felt like an embarrassment. However, that feels like a lifetime ago now.
Among the myriad challenges and setbacks I’ve faced, perhaps the most formidable was overcoming my own self-doubt. It took a series of unexpected events to jolt me out of my inertia. Like ripping off a bandage, I shed my old life and embraced a new path. Yet, that new beginning proved to be more of an ending, a demise that ultimately led to my rebirth as Genrey.
The journey of overcoming doubt and learning to believe in myself has been a continuous process. While my story might come across as somewhat aloof, there is much more to these stories that could be explored another time. For now, if there’s one message I hope to convey, it’s this: I wouldn’t change a single thing about my journey. And this is only the beginning.

I’m deeply passionate about my work as a singer-songwriter and performer. My journey in music has been a profound exploration of self-expression and authenticity. Through my art, I specialize in crafting emotive and evocative songs that I hope will resonate with listeners on a deeply personal level.
I am known for my ability to express emotions in my performances, and my introspective lyrics, inviting listeners into a world where vulnerability meets empowerment. My recent song, “Romanticizing,” from my EP “Romanticize,” encapsulates this ethos, delving into the complexities of love and the human experience.
What I’m most proud of is my commitment to prioritizing growth over perfection. Every setback and challenge has been an opportunity for me to evolve both as an artist and as an individual. I’ve learned to embrace imperfections and use them as catalysts for creativity and self-discovery.

The overarching theme of the EP revolves around the dichotomy of good versus evil, symbolizing the struggle between innocence and the darker emotions that can consume us. It’s about the journey of losing one’s innocence and grappling with the complexities of love, particularly when it leads to feelings of anger and protection.
In “Romanticizing,” the titular track of the EP, I delve into the concept of idealized love, where we create romanticized versions of our partners and relationships that may not align with reality. It’s a poignant reflection on the tendency to romanticize love, even when it may be far from perfect.
Each song on the EP offers a different perspective on love, from the unrequited longing in “I Do” to the raw passion of and confusion of “Lust for Love” and the toxic dynamics explored in “Run.” “Waste My Time” delves into the obsessive nature of love and taps into gaslighting yourself, while “Romanticizing” confronts the idea of idealized love head-on.
By providing this diverse perspective on relationships, “Romanticize” invites listeners to explore the multifaceted nature of love and reflect on their own experiences. It’s a journey of self-discovery and introspection, set against a backdrop of haunting melodies and evocative lyrics.
What sets me apart from others is my unwavering dedication to authenticity. I strive to create music that is genuine and heartfelt, never compromising my artistic vision for the sake of conformity. My willingness to share my journey, including the struggles and triumphs, allows me to connect with my audience on a profound level. Ultimately, it’s this authenticity that defines my artistry and sets me apart in the industry.
How do you define success?
Success, to me, is not just about achieving external milestones or accolades, but rather about personal fulfillment and growth. It’s about setting meaningful goals and working towards them with passion, determination, and authenticity. Success is also about overcoming challenges, learning from failures, and continuously striving to become the best version of myself.
Ultimately, success is defined by inner satisfaction and a sense of purpose. It’s about feeling proud of the work I do, knowing that I’ve made a positive impact, and living a life aligned with my values and aspirations. Success is not a destination but a journey, and it’s found in the moments of growth, connection, and joy along the way.
