Ebony, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Hi, I’m Ebony. I wear many hats in life, and each one brings me immense joy and fulfillment. Growing up in the loving care of my mother and grandmother, I was nurtured with values that became the compass of my life—kindness, compassion, and a deep desire to positively impact others. Their unwavering support has fueled my journey and propelled me into the life and woman I am today.
Life has presented me with both triumphs and challenges. While pursuing my passion for track and field, I was blessed with a full-ride scholarship to Auburn University. The passing of my mother during my freshman year was a heart-wrenching moment, but it strengthened my resolve to persevere and make her proud. I was presented with another full track and field scholarship at The University of Miami, which was closer to home.
This opportunity not only allowed me to continue pursuing my passion but also made it much easier to take care of my grandmother after the passing of my mom. Determined to overcome any obstacles, I channeled my dedication into completing my college degree in Motion Picture Production with a minor in Theatre at the University of Miami, a true testament to the indomitable spirit within me.
From College Athlete to Olympian: In 2018, I turned pro, dedicating myself to my track and field career. My hard work and determination culminated in a dream come true—representing my paternal Liberian lineage at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. From the dreams I held as a 10-year-old just starting track to the breathtaking reality of becoming an Olympian, my journey has been nothing short of awe-inspiring.
The road to success was filled with dedication, hard work, and unwavering support from those closest to me. Standing among the world’s finest athletes on the Olympic stage was a dream beyond imagination, and it taught me that with passion and perseverance, the possibilities are endless. My journey is a true testament to the power of chasing one’s dreams fearlessly.
Glimpsing Greatness in Tokyo, and the Unwavering Pursuit to Paris: The 2020 Tokyo Olympics marked an unforgettable chapter in my journey—a moment when I soared as a semifinalist among the world’s most exceptional athletes. The thrill of competing on the grandest stage was unparalleled, igniting a fire within me that refused to be extinguished. As the cheering crowds and flashing lights faded, the dream didn’t end; instead, it metamorphosed into an even greater vision: the quest for the next Paris Olympics.
Passions Beyond the Track: Beyond the world of sports, I have a deep love for the arts. As a creative, I naturally grew towards the art of photography, which allows me to capture and freeze moments of beauty forever. Through my lens, I hope to inspire and bring joy to others.
When not on the track or behind the camera, you can find me meditating, connecting with my inner self, and seeking a sense of peace and balance in the chaos of life. Furthermore, my soul thrives on embracing new experiences, and my love for acting is a passion that allows me to venture into captivating roles and immerse myself in the enchanting world of storytelling.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Losing my mother to breast cancer in 2014 and almost losing my grandmother to a brain bleed, I was competing in Brazil when it happened and they gave her a 30% chance of survival but she overcame. Taking care of her while trying to train and compete was hard but I did what I had to do. And she is back to full health now. I tore my iliopsoas in 2019, with no health insurance so I had to end my season and rehab myself. Then 2020 COVID-19 hit and shut the world down.

I think I’m very blessed, no matter what turmoil comes about (mental, emotional, or physical) I always overcome and thrive.
