Check Out Mimi Alas’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mimi Alas.

Mimi Alas

Hi Mimi, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey started 11 years ago in El Salvador, where I was born and raised. At 17, I started with my best friend the blog Yeah Lalalu, where we talked about all things fashion, beauty, and music for teens. I studied for a bachelor’s in Communications, then a master’s in Fashion Marketing at Universidad Complutense de Madrid, and a second master’s in Spanish Journalism at Florida International University.

My story is a story of faith and perseverance since being in Miami, in the entertainment industry, is what I’ve always wanted. I grew up watching Sábado Gigante, El Show de Cristina, and El Gordo y la Flaca, and even my childhood games were pretending I was a TV host or interviewing celebrities.

Since I was 18, I built my life around this dream, and I was always doing something else, besides school or work, to work on my dreams. I moved to Miami by myself, with no money, but with a lot of faith and determination to make things happen the right way while honoring God, myself, and my family, who have been the greatest support.

I got where I am by showing up, having the right attitude, and talking to everyone everywhere I go. There’s a huge power in networking, as long as you make it from a genuine place. Also, be humble and be always open to learning. This season of my life is where I’ve been learning the most from this industry. It’s not easy, but I’m always eager to learn and give my best.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Honestly, it’s been the hardest, yet most rewarding process of my life, and I know God it’s not done yet. I left the comfortable life I had back home, risking all my life savings, because I believed SO much in myself and my potential, and I always said that I only needed to be at the right location, to start knocking on doors and making my dreams happen.

Being by yourself in a foreign country is not easy, especially when you are close to your family and friends. I’ve been blessed with amazing friends in this city, and I rest knowing my beloved ones back home are just one Facetime call away.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m an Entertainment Journalist and Content Creator. I specialize in the Latin entertainment industry, creating content and interviewing celebrities. I also have a heart for empowering women, so I create content related to self-love, career, relationships, and faith, always focused on encouraging women to become the best version of themselves.

I think I’m very proud of the road that I walked to get here since it’s been HARD! I’ve cried endless nights trying to figure things out, but I’ve also worked HARD to figure things out, and that’s how I am here. I’ve learned to not take for granted any opportunity that comes my way, and because it’s been a journey to get here, I don’t see opportunities as little or big, to me, any opportunity, as long as is aligned with my core values, my beliefs and the path I want to take for my life and my career, is a big opportunity.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I think the Entertainment Industry, at least on the interviews and the content side, is looking for more “realness” and less of this perfect and curated world that social media tries to show us. My hosting coach told me that what would set apart a journalist from the rest, is the type of questions we make to the artist we are interviewing or the type of content we are creating.

This doesn’t mean we have to be disrespectful or cross boundaries, I would NEVER encourage anyone to do that, but to challenge ourselves to be different and embrace what makes us or the media outlet unique, and go from there.
