Today we’d like to introduce you to Zahir Stevens.
Hi Zahir, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I began rapping in 5th grade (10 years old) at Myrtle Grove K-8 Center in Carol City. I started recording my music in 6th grade at my cousin’s house and they pushed me to continue rapping. I ended up writing songs on the daily to perfect my craft and eventually, I released my songs on Soundcloud starting in 8th grade. In 7th grade, I won the Piano Slam 11 poetry contest.
From then on I had all of the confidence I needed to take music seriously. Fast forward to my sophomore year (15 years old) of high school, I began releasing my songs on all platforms and eventually released mixtapes. Throughout high school, I’ve been promoting my music and trying to network with different artists. During the summer entering my senior year(17 years old) I released two music videos on YouTube. I have continued to promote and release my music on all platforms.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When I first showed people outside of my family the music that I’ve written and recorded I was laughed at. No one took me seriously and they would troll me and put me down. After a while people started to like the quality of music I recorded and my friends began to support my music. I’m still facing problems with managing my money to promote and fund music because it’s really expensive. Also, another issue is getting notoriety and noticed outside of school.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My name is Zahir Stevens and I’m a 17-year-old rapper from Carol City, I love making music because it allows me to express myself and have fun. I’m most proud of staying persistent in chasing my dreams of being a successful musician. What makes me different from others when it comes to music is that I have a unique vibe and sound. My music is for people who want to turn their car speakers on to max volume and vibe in traffic. I am one of the hardest young underground artists in Miami and I’m just searching for an opportunity to shine.
What makes you happy?
Music and money. Music is a beautiful art and without it, I can not live my life. Money is a part of the process of being successful so when I earn it I know I’m moving in the right direction.
