Conversations with Dr. Ish Major

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Ish Major.

Dr. Ish Major

Hi Dr. Major, we are so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Sometimes, you have to fail at your dream to find your destiny. That’s how my dharma found me. I had just graduated from medical school and, completed residency, started a private practice with my then fiancé and sister, both psychologists. My life was exactly as I’d planned it…right up until it wasn’t.

We were all great at our jobs as helpers, but none of us knew how to run a successful business and psych practice. To say it failed horribly would be an understatement; it fell out of the sky over sunny Florida. Poor leadership and a lack of resourcefulness and experience led to me losing my dream life. I was devastated.

I took a break from practicing to see what else I might become and, in my spare time, started jotting down different interesting and curious stories I’d been told about relationships from my friends, family, and patients over that time. Those stories became a book. The Today Show noticed that book, and one day, they called my phone and invited me to talk about it. I’d never done any TV or anything like that before, but when I landed in that studio at Rockefeller Center and sat across from Hoda, Kathie Lee, and Al Roker, it felt like I’d been doing it my entire life.

In that moment I decided that this was I wanted to do, and I’ve relished bringing my unique skill set to television audiences from that day forward. Life always puts you exactly where you’re supposed to be to become that next higher version of yourself.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Walking the road to Hollywood is anything but smooth. There are inherent pitfalls and roadblocks all along the way. Some are easy to see coming, and others will blindside you.

Jack LaLanne, this country’s first nationally recognized fitness coach and host of the longest-running fitness television show, grew an empire. He was the king, but the true ruler of that empire was his wife, Elaine. She was the driving force that gave him the power of belief. She said, “Before you can do anything, you must simply believe you can.”

The biggest struggle for me along the way has been believing that some skinny little kid from South Carolina had anything useful to offer the world. I also struggle to understand why the world wants to hear it from me. I had a new dream, but my lack of belief held me back at every turn. I read something by Wayne Dyer that changed my life.

He said, “The only thing keeping you from getting what you want is the story you keep telling yourself about why you don’t have it.” Game changer! With the proper mindset, there is no obstacle you cannot overcome.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a board-certified adult, child, and adolescent psychiatrist. I own multiple substance use clinics across the southeast and maintain a practice of select private clients. Having that said, I’m most known for being the go-to Celebrity Psychiatrist to the Stars. I specialize in relationships, so when you think of your favorite television star, reality star, singer, rapper, or actor who’s ever had any significant relationship or personal emotional challenges, chances are, I’ve worked with them.

I co-host WeTV’s hit series Marriage & Family Boot Camp Reality Stars and Amazon’s Counsel Culture, presented by Nick Cannon. I am a frequent guest and resident expert on The Nick Cannon Show, The Daily Blast Live, Access Hollywood Live, Steve, and The Today Show. I’ve appeared with Kourtney Kardashian, Carrie Fisher, Brooke Shields, Howie Mandel, Ne-Yo, AnnaLynne McCord, August Alsina and Carmen Electra. I’ve been featured in People, In Touch, O Mag, Women’s Health, Cosmo, USA Today, Match.com, and Shade 45 on Sirius XM.

I’ve been named to the prestigious list of America’s Top Psychiatrists for the last three years. I am recognized by the International Association of Healthcare Professionals as one of the Leading Physicians of the World. I’m most proud of how I was raised with five sisters, one brother, and eight aunts.

My parents were married for 56 years and never missed an opportunity to let us know that despite our humble beginnings, there was nothing we couldn’t become! I was raised by a tribe of women, which has given me the unique advantage of understanding how a woman thinks, what she feels, and, therefore, what she does. Women are emotional leaders in every relationship dynamic, so understanding them gives me a special skill set that will enable me to heal any relationship from the inside out.

What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The lessons have been many along my journey, and they’ve all come exactly when I needed them most. No one lesson is more important than the other. If I could distill it down to a few key takeaways for me, it would be:

Just be you.
Never give up.
Never stop trying.
Try not to hurt anything you love.
The sexiest thing about you is your story; never abandon it.
