Today we’d like to introduce you to Marc Lorenzo Singh.
Hi Marc, I’m so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed with your story and how you got to where you are today.
I’m originally from Trinidad and Tobago and I moved to Florida at 16 years old with my family. It was during this time that I became interested in music specifically guitar. My father had an old classical guitar in the house, but no one played it, so I decided that maybe I should learn how to play. I would watch YouTube tutorials, look up guitar tabs, and try my best to practice along with the actual song. As a teenager, I would practice for hours and listen to new music all the time.
A defining moment in my guitar journey was when I discovered John Mayer’s music for the first time. His virtuosic guitar skills along with his soulful vocal delivery inspired me and made me take playing guitar more seriously. He’s still my favorite musician today and he is the biggest influence on my playing, from the way I bend the strings to the way I approach blues-based pentatonic guitar soloing. Some of my other influences include Paramore, Ed Sheeran, Bon Iver, James Bay, Philip Philips, Panic! At The Disco, and 5 Seconds of Summer.
I usually listen to guitar-oriented music such as Blues, Rock, Folk, Country, and Pop but I’m always open to listening to new genres or styles as I feel that this helps you to discover your unique voice on the instrument.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Guitar did not come naturally to me; it required a lot of time and practice especially in the beginning stages of learning because my fingers would hurt when pressing down on the strings. However, I stuck with it and I’m happy that I did because music and guitar are very important in my life.
The process of singing while playing guitar was initially very challenging for me because it required me to be very comfortable with switching guitar chords smoothly so I could focus on the lyrics and singing the song. Another obstacle I encountered in my guitar journey was playing live in front of others. Most guitar players are used to practicing at home so adapting to a live setting can be difficult. I’ve realized that it’s important to be as relaxed as possible while playing and to practice in front of a few friends first before playing to a bigger audience.
I appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I have currently played guitar for over 12 years now, working as a guitar instructor and I’m an artist for Breedlove Guitars. I’ve played at numerous college events at both Broward College and Florida International University in the past and I play on Instagram.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success to me is the process of increasing my proficiency on the instrument, improving my vocal abilities, and inspiring others to learn how to play guitar.
I think encouraging others to play is especially important because although the guitar is traditionally a very popular instrument, I’ve realized that a lot of people aren’t interested in learning how to play an instrument anymore due to the proliferation of electronic music.
