Rising Stars: Meet Mary Gallagher Stout

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Gallagher Stout. They and their team shared their story with us below:

Mary Gallagher Stout

MG Stout, the artistic luminary from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, brings a unique blend of talent and vision to the world of contemporary art. Graduating magna cum laude with a Philosophy degree from Rosemont College in 1996, Stout’s creative journey has been an electrifying ride.

In 2006, she honed her skills during a graduate summer studio residency at Virginia Commonwealth University. This experience marked the beginning of her ascent in the art world. Soon after, she secured a coveted spot as a resident studio artist at the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton, Virginia. Here, she invited the public to witness her creative process, igniting the “Real Life Sketching with Mary Gallagher Stout” series, an instant hit in the DC Metro area.

In 2012, Stout co-founded Studio 4 in Old Town Alexandria, VA, a haven where art becomes a force for social change. In less than a year, Studio 4 was crowned “BEST Gallery” by the Washington Post Express in 2013, a testament to its transformative impact. Stout’s passion transcended the canvas when she collaborated with veterans on “After the Parade,” shedding light on PTSD’s effects on families. Her art collections are at esteemed institutions like the Securities Exchange Commission, Mary Washington University, and Boston Children’s Hospital Hale Building.

In 2018, she ventured westward, settling in Northern California, and continuing her artistic journey amid the pandemic’s challenges. Her work garnered recognition in curated collections on Saatchi Art, while she exhibited at renowned art fairs including The Other Art Fair, Superfine, and Spectrum Miami.

Today, as a resident artist at Studio 18 in Fort Lauderdale, FL, Stout’s talent continues to shine. Her signature custom pet portraits adorn the UncommonGoods Catalog and Website, and her art remains not just accessible but highly collectible, making its mark across the United States and Europe.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
A far cry from a smooth road; profound challenges and significant hurdles have marked my journey. At the tender age of 9, I experienced the heartbreaking loss of my mother, a pivotal event that cast a shadow over my formative years.

As adolescence unfolded, I found myself navigating treacherous waters, making choices that led me into an abusive relationship and an early pregnancy at the age of 16. The arrival of my child, however, became a catalyst for change, infusing me with an undeniable strength to extricate myself from the harmful situation. Despite the hardships, I summoned the resilience to complete high school while working part-time and relying on public assistance.

Life took a positive turn when I met a supportive partner and, with the backing of friends and family, managed to get myself through college. Although my academic pursuits initially led me toward philosophy with aspirations of becoming a professor, another unexpected twist emerged. Following the birth of my daughter, I grappled with severe postpartum depression, an unexpected and formidable challenge that reshaped my trajectory once again.

While grappling with severe postpartum depression, art became my guiding light. Faced with the daunting challenge, I immersed myself in the therapeutic act of painting, transforming my home into a canvas of creativity during the vibrant era of 90s faux finishes and murals. The positive reception from visitors encouraged me to explore decorative painting further, prompting me to enroll in classes and eventually establish my own art business.

As the business took its course, I recognized a pivotal moment for reinvention. Steering away from the commercial realm, I redirected my focus towards cultivating a personal body of work. This transformative decision led me to take a significant step in my artistic journey—a graduate summer studio residency at Virginia Commonwealth University. Subsequently, I earned a coveted spot at the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton, VA, through a juried process.

It was within the nurturing environment of the Workhouse Arts Center that I discovered not only my artistic voice but also honed a distinctive painting style. This pivotal juncture marked the culmination of my artistic evolution, solidifying my commitment to creating meaningful, personal works that resonate with my unique perspective and experiences.

Through this tumultuous journey, I’ve come to realize that a positive attitude, coupled with an unwavering openness to both learn and share, has become the very essence of my existence. Breathing life into this perspective, I’ve found that art, for me, is not just a creative outlet—it is life itself. It is a powerful tool, a transformative force capable of infusing beauty into every facet of existence.

Embracing a positive mindset and a continuous willingness to learn and connect with others has been the driving force behind my resilience. Art has served not only as a means of personal expression but also as a dynamic conduit for sharing narratives and forging connections with those around me. It is a testament to the profound impact that art can have on life, turning it into a canvas of endless possibilities.

In this realization, I’ve found a deeper purpose, a conviction that extends beyond the strokes of a brush or the creation of a masterpiece. Art, for me, is the embodiment of life’s beauty—a guiding principle that encourages not only personal growth but also the enrichment of the lives of others. It is a realization that has become the very reason I breathe, fueling my passion to create and share, making life a beautiful and meaningful tapestry.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Paint your truth. I’m for an art that is honest and expressive. My practice is ever-evolving and will not be confined to any one subject. Every hour in my studio has brought my painting to this point. It is rooted in my personal experiences, love of color, and the surprises that greet me on the canvas. It’s the work that inspires me to go to places unthinkable.

Painting connects me with masters of the past and the community of artists I’ve come to know.

Painting is me witnessing. Testifying with color, line, and form. Grab an eyeful of how I see the world and what matters to me at any particular moment. Folks fought heavy and hard to afford me this beautiful life. I honor those great souls with every doodle, painting, and story I tell. I’m just doing my best to make them proud.

In my artistic expression, I weave a tapestry reflective of my worldview deeply anchored in humor, humility, and a commitment to serving others. Each stroke of my paintbrush is an earnest attempt to forge connections with people, bridging the gaps between our stories. Through my art, I aspire to archive my own experiences and serve as a conduit for sharing the diverse narratives of those around me.

I firmly believe in the mantra that the personal is political, infusing my work with a sense of purpose beyond the canvas. My creations exist in a symbiotic relationship with the artists who have influenced and inspired me. Drawing from their wisdom and techniques, my art becomes a testament to the collective journey of creativity, forging a dialogue that transcends time and resonates with the shared human experience.

My art is a symphony, dismissing negativity to create paintings in sync with my unique rhythm. At its core is the belief that happiness is a deliberate state of mind shaped by choices and actions, echoing through each piece as a testament to the profound influence of positivity. My goal is to craft inspiring pieces, gently reminding us of the innate strength in embracing a positive outlook.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
My love of learning fuels a perpetual curiosity, and an insatiable hunger to acquire new knowledge and skills. This trait propels me to seek growth opportunities, whether through formal education, hands-on experiences, or interactions with others. It enables me to adapt to evolving circumstances, stay abreast of industry trends, and innovate in response to challenges.

Complementing this is my gritty determination—a resilient mindset that propels me forward in the face of obstacles. It empowers me to persevere through setbacks, viewing them not as roadblocks but as opportunities for growth and refinement. This tenacity ensures that I remain focused on my goals, unwavering in the pursuit of excellence.

Together, my love of learning and gritty determination create a dynamic synergy that propels me forward, fostering a continuous cycle of improvement and success. They are the driving forces behind my ability to overcome challenges, embrace change, and consistently strive for excellence in all endeavors.
