Today we’d like to introduce you to Sebastian Alvarez.
Hi Sebastian, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Thank you for having me. Have you ever witnessed the sheer joy of kids unwrapping a Christmas gift, losing their minds over a video game console? Well, that was my older brother, Alex, receiving a brand new Nintendo. Observing his excitement over a simple cardboard box, I embraced my role as the younger brother, realizing that, at that moment, nothing else in the world mattered. My brother opened the door to the ways of the world, a path that has led me to where I am today.
I played games as if the world were ending, neglecting meals and forming less-than-ideal habits. However, over time, I discovered another passion that overshadowed my gaming obsession: creating games. My childhood was blessed with incredibly supportive parents—my mom, a titan in the commercial sector, and my dad, a creative auteur with keen supervisory skills.
This convergence shaped my dual passion for creation and the joy found in marketing, connecting with people, receiving feedback, and collaborating with others to craft moments that evoke emotions. In essence, I am a game designer with my studio, focusing on video game development.
I revel in the harmonious marriage between the business and creative worlds, currently immersed in the creation of my latest game, Soul Food. Developed in collaboration with my Chief Creative Officer, the Networking Maverick, and featuring music by Nocturnal Fix (both previously featured here), and of course myself.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
In 2012, my mentor passed away, marking a pivotal moment for our team of recent grads working under our beloved teacher-turned-boss. I like to believe she sought the perfect group of students, leading to her retirement from teaching and the inception of Everywhere Studios with us. Our journey took us to major studios worldwide, exposing us to cutting-edge technology.
Despite the successes, there was a defining moment when I felt out of place, discontent with my work quality compared to others, and contemplating a move to another state for a potential opportunity. It was then that Diana, my mentor, engaged in a conversation, prompting me to reflect on my “why”—a concept I had never considered. Since that moment, my “why” has been the driving force, consistently guiding my path.
Following the dissolution of the company, a group of us embarked on a new venture, venturing into the realm of creating video games. Shaving our heads symbolized a fresh start as we dedicated weekends to our passion, only to face financial challenges leading to an empty wallet before the year concluded. What unfolded? I achieved my dream, only to let it slip away due to inexperience, disorganization, and a lack of leadership. It was a harsh lesson that taught me the undeniable truth: mere desire isn’t sufficient for success.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I create games—a medium through which I express myself, my thoughts, and my unique perspective on the world. Each game is a narrative crafted to convey a story, offering players a fresh viewpoint filled with memorable moments. The potency of storytelling intertwines with the interactive nature of video games, enabling players not only to experience my stories but also to shape them in their way. It evolves into a collaborative journey between me and the player, weaving a narrative uniquely theirs.
With every project, I’ve come to embrace a profound pride, recognizing that each is a piece of myself shared with others. This creative venture is further enriched by the unwavering support of my wife, Lauren Marsicano. She consistently introduced me to perspectives on life I hadn’t fathomed, fulfilling the dream of a partner interested in unexplored realms. This dynamic allows me to infuse my nerdy hobbies with unconventional twists, designing experiences that transcend my typical circle of peers.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Miami caters to diverse tastes, offering a plethora of experiences for everyone. When Lauren and I seek leisurely activities, numerous nearby locations come to mind, conveniently within walking distance from our home. This year, we anticipate embracing more active adventures, fortunate to be surrounded by a wealth of options. Jet skiing, cycling, and hiking become year-round pursuits, thanks to the consistently amazing weather.
However, Miami’s charm comes with a caveat—the need to navigate the city primarily by vehicle, amidst some of the world’s most assertive drivers. Lauren and I, avid travelers to Orlando for our favorite theme parks, are always reminded of our Miami arrival, marked by trucks boldly swerving into our lane—an audacious “welcome home.” Yet, this minor inconvenience pales in comparison to the enchantment of the incredible city that is Miami.
