Rising Stars: Meet Cindy Hing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cindy Hing.

Cindy Hing

Hi Cindy, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.

I began my adventure in a small village located in Georgetown, Guyana – a South American country. I was born to parents of Chinese-Indian descent. When I was just 5 months old, my family and I relocated to Miami, Florida. We used to travel back and forth between Georgetown and Miami before we eventually decided to settle down in Miramar, Florida. This is where I spent most of my childhood and teenage years, attending middle and high school.

Following that, I pursued my undergraduate studies in Communications at Florida International University. During my time there, I had the opportunity to intern at several radio, newspaper, and television stations across South Florida. My last internship was at South Florida PBS, where I worked on the production of two shows – “Check, Please! South Florida” and “Art Loft”. A year later, I received an offer to work as an associate producer at South Florida PBS on the show “Issues with Helen Ferre.”

In 2017, I participated in my alma mater’s Leadership Fellows Program for the Advancement of Women in Communication at FIU. This mentorship program pairs up early-career media professionals with top executives in the field.

Later, I produced another PBS show named “On the Town in The Palm Beaches with Frank Licari,” for which I received an Emmy nomination in 2019 for the Riviera Beach and Singer Island episode. That was the most fun I have ever had working on a show.

My PBS colleague, Sergio Figuera, and I founded Jetsetter Films, a media production company, in 2023. Currently, we are working on two projects – a documentary titled “Land of Mermaids,” which delves into the influence of mermaids in the state of Florida, and a travelogue show named “Day Tripping in The Palm Beaches.”

The latter showcases one-day itineraries that feature restaurants, attractions, and activities in Palm Beach County while emphasizing hassle-free and sustainable travel methods available in the area.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?

It is possible to follow all the recommendations, such as interning to gain hands-on experience, networking with the right people, and sending out more resumes than you can count, only to find yourself with a career you love living paycheck-to-paycheck. This situation made me second guess my career choices and that is why I decided to return to the legal field. But I always felt like something was missing in my professional life because I wasn’t doing what I loved. So, getting the opportunity to produce and host ‘Day Tripping in The Palm Beaches’ on the side is nothing less than a dream come true for me. This show would not be possible without the support and sponsorship of the Palm Beach County Film & Television Commission.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?

Currently, I am serving as both the producer and host of “Day Tripping in The Palm Beaches.” The first episode of the show features the City of West Palm Beach, showcasing popular adventures and attractions while utilizing various transportation options such as buses, trains, bikes, ride share, and more.

In the next two episodes, we will be featuring Jupiter, Palm Beach Gardens, Boca Raton, and Delray Beach. The best part of my job is collaborating with the people of Palm Beach County and showcasing the incredible local adventures that can be enjoyed on any given day.

Get ready to go Day Tripping in Spring 2024!
