Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Russell.
Michael, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born in London, UK. When I was 2 years old, my mom decided to take the leap and move to America, choosing Miami as our new home. I grew up on Key Biscayne but instead of going to high school here, I decided to go back to England where I stayed for 8 years. So, it has been a lot of back and forth for me, which I love.
I moved back to Miami in 2010 for a job opportunity at an advertisement firm and to focus on my solo music career. A year later, my best friends started an entertainment + lifestyle company called Red Rabbit Presents and signed me as their first musical act. Since then, I’ve DJ’d in almost every club in Miami and had the privilege to travel the world.
A few years ago, I wanted to push my creative boundaries by combining my love for music and the visual arts. I saved up, bought a camera and started taking photos. I now run my own photography company and hope to have my first exhibition later this year.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being creative, I struggle with my inner dialogue all the time. Whether I’m working on a song or a creative pitch for a client, it’s a solo process that starts with just me in front of a laptop or a moleskin. By now, I’m used to the ups and downs of creativity, you just have to trust the process.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Mike Russ Music + Michael Russell Photography – what should we know?
The combination of visuals and I’m very hands on with all aspects of the creative process.
I’ve been working on new music and finally get to release it in the coming months. I’ll be directing the music video for the lead single off my EP, so very excited about that.
In terms of photography, I’m probably best known for my portraiture stuff. I’m a firm believer in story telling and I try to get that across in my photos.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Perseverance… never stop.
Curiosity… stay interested, I’m forever learning.
