Rising Stars: Meet Rebecca Barba

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Barba.

Rebecca Barba

Hi Rebecca, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I am a first-generation Cuban-American born and raised in South Florida.

I was blessed with Art teachers, who were true visionaries throughout my grade school years: Mr. Hanna from Palm Springs Elementary, Mrs. Graney from Miami Lakes Elementary, Mrs. Renaud from Miami Lakes Jr., and Mrs. Nickols from Hialeah Miami Lakes Sr. High. Their guidance cultivated my artistic talents inspiring me to pursue a Minor in Visual Arts, at Florida International University.

Post-university, I was fortunate to meet and be inspired by Artist, Pablo Contrisciani, who helped unlock my unique Expressionistic style. I have since started describing my painting style to be a combination of Expressionism, and Impressionism with hints of Surrealism.

In 2010, I collaborated with a local venue to debut my first solo live painting show, I was fortunate to have talented photographer, Ivanara Moura capture video of my painting process. I had always described my painting process with music as being in a trance and allowing the music and my energy to guide the creative process.

However, after seeing the footage, it confirmed that when I am in my most creative state, I transport myself into a trance-like flow vibing to the musical beats as my rhythmical brush strokes dance on the canvas.

In 2012, I drew inspiration from my South African Safari experience to create a series of acrylic paintings titled, “The Circles of Life” which debuted at a solo show in collaboration with Baltus Furniture, in the Miami, Design District.

My series, “Chakra Enlightenment” is based on the colors and movement of my Chakras and the energy I feel and receive from others. These paintings reflect an abundance of positive vibrations inspired by connections with family and friends.

In 2017, I had a serendipitous re-encounter with Amazing Artist, Fin Dac, whose work I had admired for years prior. I assisted for a few days in the creation of a large rooftop mural in Wynwood. Learning to use spray paint under the guidance of one of your living idols was mind-blowing!

I’ve been charmed to expand my contribution to global private commissions and to have worked with various hotels and galleries in Miami Beach, Midtown, and Wynwood Florida.  I look forward to what’s to come in my artistic journey!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My artistic journey hasn’t been linear by any means – and I wouldn’t have it any other way! I’ve been fortunate to connect with individuals who have given me opportunities to exhibit my artwork and who have paved the way for me to continue challenging myself as an artist.

At times, my dual-career-focused life has been a roadblock in the arts community. However, I celebrate the yin and yang notion of duality, as it provides a well-balanced business-minded approach to managing, Art of Life by Rebecca B. LLC.

Developing a thick skin and learning not to let the rejections get to you is something that gets easier with time. The reality is, that not everyone will connect with your work, and that’s ok. However, what’s important is staying true to your brand and self, not letting the “NOs” creep into your psyche and alter your creations.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My passion is creating Art. I draw inspiration from moments in life and global surroundings. The most creative magical moments occur as I become lost in my artwork, at times this may be very intense as the energy is flowing and all is aligned.

I cherish the moments of purity that occur with the creative process. This especially holds for both the literal and figurative, “begin with a white canvas.” From the time the first brush strokes up against the surface of the canvas, artwork has been conceived. What follows next are limitless possibilities of what it shall become.

Creativity doesn’t occur on command; the energy and vibrations surrounding and influencing us act as a stimulus. Music is a key contributor that shapes my artwork; I could never create in silence! Many times, songs become hypnotic chants allowing me to fully escape into the sacred moments of creation.

Each painting is a part of me, a glimpse into my soul at the moment of its inception.

Life is what inspires me to continue this artistic journey. I look forward to the excitement of the unknown art I will create. I live grateful for today, and the opportunity to connect with others through my art.

What are your plans for the future?
My creations are rooted in interpretations of moments in my life expressed by passionate dance-like brush strokes in captivating hues. This is why I chose the name, “Art of Life by Rebecca B.” for my business. A collection of paintings derived from daily experiences and the universe around me, life is what inspires me!

Art Basel, and Miami Art Week, are in my immediate future, it’s the best time of year in my home city!   I am always excited to see the new art that will move me! I will draw creativity from the art fair festivities, as I embark on a new painting series inspired by my global travels.

Thanks for joining me in my artistic journey, I look forward to the excitement of the unknown art I will create. I live grateful for today, cheers to creativity!
