Today we’d like to introduce you to Mario Ramil.
Hi Mario, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
This career path officially started 2 weeks before my 1st daughter was born. I was 23 years old and essentially going through a life crisis, because becoming a dad was the biggest responsibility I had ever had to face. I realized that if I was going to raise my daughter to follow her dreams and teach her that she could do anything she put her mind to, I should lead by example.
I had always known traditional 9-5, cubicle jobs, didn’t work for me. I would sit and daydream and write my bits in my head while I was supposed to be working. I was miserable getting up and doing the same mundane thing over and over again, I knew that couldn’t be the rest of my life. When I was a kid, one of my friend’s dads was a stand-up comedian and local radio host, Eddy Calderon. I remember looking forward to being at their house, not to play, but to pick his brain, and watch him write, and I would always beg to go to work with him.
When I sat back and thought about the direction, I wanted my life to go, I knew I wanted to be in control of it, so I booked an open mic and gave it a shot. I still cringe when I watch that video of my 1st stand-up, but it set the rest of my life in motion for the best rollercoaster ride I’ve been on. After that, I continued to go to open mics, stepped up my social media presence, and started making sketches. When Facebook launched its live video streaming, I took full advantage and decided to start a live podcast called “Inside the Sewing Room” from my girlfriend’s grandmother’s 4×4 sewing room, and I got some pretty cool guests to come on.
Between creating content on my podcast, making sketches, and creating some wholesome father-daughter content, I decided it was time to branch out and follow my dreams. So, I quit my full-time job and became a full-time comedian instead. I’ve been able to climb my way to where I am now. I’m far from where I would like to be, but I’m proud of the things I’ve accomplished in the 9 years I’ve been doing this.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No journey in life is ever just a smooth road. I truly believe adversity shapes you and helps you become the best version of yourself. I have had so many ups and downs since I started this career, but with each bump in the road, I have learned more about not only the industry and how it works but myself as well.
I’m far from perfect, but in a cutthroat industry like the entertainment business, I’ve learned just how easy it is to ruffle feathers just by being yourself. At the end of the day, I stay in my lane and just keep focused on my goals and checking off the boxes. I know where I want to be and the things I want to accomplish, and even if there are some obstacles along the way, I welcome the lessons I’m supposed to learn from them!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I don’t think I can categorize myself as just one thing, I’m always looking for new creative outlets to create and inspire. I started this career doing stand-up and creating social media content, but I also act, write, create voiceovers, and make music!
I am probably most known for my stand-up comedy and online sketches, but I am working on changing that. I can’t wait to share with my followers all the projects I’ve been working on during 2023. I think that’s what I’m most proud of, that I have aspired to create things out of the norm of what people expect from me, and I’m holding myself to that.
I don’t like being put in a box and I think that sets me apart from others. I told myself a long time ago, that through this journey, I would stay true to myself, and sometimes that means creating my lane.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc.?
My greatest resource of motivation is my family. I wake up every day not only to reach goals for myself but to make them proud and give them the life they deserve.
I want to be an inspiration for my daughters the way they are for me, in hopes that when I’m old they won’t put me in a home. Just kidding, but really, family is everything.
