Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelby L. Bransgrove.
Hi Shelby, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I spearhead an interior design firm – Interiorspaces By Design – based out of Miami, FL, alongside my mother, Vickie Barocas. My mother founded Interiorspaces By Design in 2006, so it was a large part of my life growing up. I remember admiring her style and constantly re-decorating my room with her help. An old friend of mine always used to say I should join my mother’s business, but I never gave it much mind.
Throughout high school and college, I worked in the luxury fashion industry. I worked as a Public Relations Associate for a fashion house and as a buyer for a boutique. I always felt that I was destined to work in fashion, but after six years, I started to want a change.
Upon graduating from Florida International University in 2020 with my Bachelor of Science in Public Relations, Advertising, and Applied Communications, I decided to join forces with my mother and work for Interiorspaces By Design. It was the perfect time, as business was booming. Last year, I completed my Certification in Interior Design at the University of Miami.
I love the business and our clients. I found parallels between fashion and interior design and ultimately found more purpose in design because it truly feels like you have a great impact on the life of your clients. The home is such a personal, intimate space, and it is an honor to be trusted by our clients to make theirs beautiful.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
My path to becoming an Interior Designer was smoother than most, as I have my mother who has been an Interior Designer for over 20 years, to offer immense guidance and support. However, there are some facets of design that have to be learned through trial and error, and I am still learning every day.
When I first started working as an Interior Design Assistant, I had no formal education and had to act as a sponge, absorbing knowledge onsite. This was not easy as there is so much information to take in. I knew from day one that Interior Design is incredibly intricate and exacting, so it requires lots of practice and experience. I was eager to learn quickly, but I realized that in this field, slow and steady is necessary in order to work properly.
The education I received when completing my Certification in Interior Design has proven to be extremely useful. I am very fortunate to learn more every day from my mother, our team, and our amazing clients.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Interiorspaces By Design?
Interiorspaces By Design is a dynamic, client-driven design firm specializing in both commercial and residential design. Interiorspaces By Design is led by myself and my mother, and together we make a fabulous design team! We are known for creating timeless, functional, expertly-curated interiors.
Through collaboration with architects, builders, and select craftsmen, we ensure each and every project is distinctive and sophisticated. We draw inspiration from our worldly travels, treasured antiques, and classic style to make every space perfect for our clients. We are extremely proud of the quality of work we complete, and the attention we pay to each and every detail of our projects.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk-taking.
Taking risks is essential to success in both business and personal life. I took a major risk when I initially completed my undergraduate degree in Public Relations and decided to shift my path to work as an Interior Designer.
At first, not working in public relations felt like it was going to be a major risk, especially since I just completed extensive studies to do so, but I followed my passion, and it has led to such fulfillment in my career and in my life.
When my mother founded Interiorspaces By Design in 2006, she too took a risk and began a small business with two children and an already very busy life. Had she not taken that risk, Interiorspaces By Design would not be what it is today. Taking a risk is always scary – but sometimes completely essential to lead you in the right direction. Be brave!
