Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony Martin.
Hi Anthony, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
My story started in Little Haiti raised by a single mother with 3 boys at the time. She really did the best she could but we were boys and were bad. Go figure. Education was never stressed or emphasized in my home. I never liked school so I avoided it every chance I got, playing sick, skipping class or just hanging out in the streets until it was time to go home. I was the oldest so I was always in trouble because I wasn’t setting a very good example. My grandmother and grandfather poured a lot into me because I felt like a loner. Once my grandfather passed it was just me and her, so once she saw me heading in the wrong direction and my mother had more children and got married my grandmother took me full time. She wanted me to have a better education so I finished off my senior year in Naples to graduate high school.
Still misguided and loving what the streets had to offer, I had to make a decision. Either find a career or the alternative to what the streets had to offer. I remember telling my grandmother I wanted to be in healthcare and with her older Haitian mentality told me men aren’t supposed to be nurses and that really stunk with me. I joined the army for 4 years and went off to experience military life and every aspect of it. I got out and still ended up back in healthcare. I went from being an EMT working in the emergency room with male nurses to a registered nurse and now a critical care nurse practitioner. My road wasn’t easy especially since I would never settle for less but I had faith and patience throughout the journey.
I literally made a list and accomplished everything in that life and then some. With life, you can create a plan but you never have the final say. I took my plans and the plans that were set for me by a high power and made a life for myself I could be proud of and motivate everyone around me to do better than me.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Nothing in my life has been a smooth road. Life is hard enough to support yourself, but being the oldest child and the oldest person in your family dynamic brings a different level of challenges. I wasn’t only trying to support myself and my new dreams I also had 11 siblings and numerous cousins looking at every move I made, so I had to make the right ones.
I worked full-time, had no support, and was trying to figure out what route I needed to take in order to accomplish my dreams. I dealt with death, financial setbacks, breakups, and family obstacles. I think my path and struggles made me who I am today and pushed me not to fail. I always thought to myself I have everyone’s back but who has mines?
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’ve been a nurse for 10 years and a Nurse Practitioner for the past 3 years working in critical care and I wanted more. I realize that medicine is my passion and I couldn’t see myself doing anything other than what I’m doing. During covid, I saw the lack of resources and thought about how could I change the dynamics. So my nursing school friend and I opened a telemedicine company that really helped people not have to leave their homes and get a certain amount of care. Last year I decided I wanted to be more hands-on in the community and would love to have my own practice. That’s where Sky’s the Limit Health & Wellness came from named after my princess.
Currently, I offer telemedicine primary care services and consults. Men and women’s health services including diabetes and high blood pressure management, Testosterone and hormone replacement, weight loss services, pre-operative clearances, and mobile medical concierges needs including IV hydration.
The most important thing about my practice and brand is one helping to bridge the gap between lack of healthcare and education due to finances and lack of resources, and also giving quality healthcare to those that can’t receive it from current providers in the community.
I want kids that look like me to know that we can accomplish anything and don’t always have to be a product of our environment. Especially my young black men in the world that lack guidance and resources.
What makes you happy?
My top on this list has to be my daughter. Being able to love and give someone something you have never had is such an amazing experience. She has changed me in so many different ways and being her dad is my happy place. It’s like having a little broke best friend you would do absolutely anything for.
The Second would have to be my career. I do something every day that helps others and that helps me to appreciate my life so much more. It gives me purpose and without purpose in life, you are lost and unfulfilled. How many people can actually say they are doing what they love and love what they do? I can!!
When I’m off and actually have downtime I love being home in my space in peace. My life is really peaceful and tranquil so the little things bring me happiness. Traveling, walks on the beach, a really good book, not to mention anything with culture.
