Daily Inspiration: Meet Mechy Sanchez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mechy Sanchez.

Hi Mechy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born in Dominican Republic where my parents adopted me when I was 3 days old, lucky right? I grew up surrounded by music and art. My dad is a writer, and my grandfather is a singer and a songwriter. I picked up the guitar when I was 8 and have been a songwriter since then. I grew up in the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica, where I was exposed heavily to Reggae music.

In a sense my life was already planned, I studied psychology in DR and moved to the USA in 2014 to study neuropsychology and go back to DR to practice; but even with all the open doors that I had to be successful in my career, I was not happy, music was always in the back of my mind since I never stopped performing and writing songs.

So I decided to study music production at Full Sail University, after that I had the opportunity of getting an internship in a few studios around Miami like Crescent Moon (Emilio Estefan’s studio) and Cutting Cane where I learned a lot from George Noriega and had a chance to work with Mana, Pedro Capo, Edith Marques, and others.

For the last couple of years, I’ve been producing different artists and participating as a songwriter on projects like Jon Secada’s Album, among others. It wasn’t until 2021 that I finally found my sound as a result of the healing journey I took in 2020.

Through meditation, journaling, and other tools I found along the way I discovered so many beautiful things about me and the world around me. Finding my sound was the physical manifestation of finding myself. I wrote my first Reggae album that is coming out soon and I can not be more excited about it.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I am fortunate enough to have the support of my parents and for that, I’m very grateful. As musicians, we all get rejected more times than we like to admit but I believe my biggest struggle has been with myself.

Fighting with anxiety, my doubts and insecurities, and not believing that I was good enough or worthy enough to be successful. I think as an artist the biggest fights are with ourselves, dealing with perfectionism, with the “it’s not ready yet” and it’s a constant battle that eventually gets better, or at least I hope it will.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe you can tell us more about your work next?
I’m well-known as an excellent songwriter and performer. I always bring honesty and fun to the stage, I always try my best to connect with my audience as much as possible. My background in all different types of music, from Latin songs, to rock, alternative and urban, makes me a versatile songwriter.

I can write very profound songs as well as urban and party songs with no problem. I believe my new sound is going to bring something fresh and unique to the new age of reggae music in the Latin industry.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and are any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
The most important thing I learned during the Covid-19 crisis was to how to get through a breakup without my friends, and without being able to go out and distract myself. I had to rely only on myself and my thoughts (scary right?).

I learned to let go of everything that was happening at the time because it was out of my control and I couldn’t do anything about it, just to be patient and let the situation unfold. It was not a pleasant experience but learned a lot from it.
