Today we’d like to introduce you to Imani Campbell.
Hi Imani, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
Thank you for having me! My name is Imani Campbell! I was born in New York and raised in Florida. I have a B.S. in Family and Child Sciences from Florida State University. The ability to help those in need has always been my passion. I came from an immigrant parent from Panama with only a high school education so when I graduated from college, it was viewed as an esteemed achievement.
Even though my parents were divorced, they both collaborated to make sure I and my siblings focused on achieving higher education and successful career paths. Ever since I was a little girl, I knew my life purpose was to help family dynamics flourish and children in need. I aspire to become a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the South Florida region.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been a roller coaster, to say the least! I am no stranger to hard work and resilience. During my college career, I was heavily involved in a variety of service-based organizations as a student leader on campus while being a full-time student and a part-time employee. That has taught me how to manage a heavy course load and work to provide for myself, while also taking out the time to give back to my community. Attending undergraduate studies during a global pandemic was not an easy adjustment for me. Constantly experiencing the deaths and illnesses of close family and friends really took a toll on my mental health.
I was in a state of constant fear of not getting sick, or even worse, getting someone I lovesick. I went through an increased amount of anxiety and depression during my last two years of college because of this experience; however, that did not stop me from achieving my goal of graduating when it would have been easier for me to take a break from school and go back home to my family. Instead, I utilized the available resources Florida State had to offer such as the University Counseling Center to help reduce my depression and anxiety, and also improve my mental well-being. I pushed myself in those moments I felt like giving up and I didn’t want to continue anymore because I am not only achieving for myself, but for those who believe in me and who will need to hear my testimony to help save their lives one day. That is why I love the field I am in. The impact of prioritizing your mental health can improve your life experience not just mentally, but physically, and emotionally as well.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am currently a legal assistant at a law office based in South Florida. My job is completely remote, so it allows me the freedom to live my day-to-day life. I just recently graduated from my undergraduate studies in Spring 2022 and decided to take a gap year so that I could take a break from school and reset my life. I will be going back for my master’s degree this summer 2023.
What sets me apart from others is that I don’t see life from just my own perspective, but I like to see the bigger picture. I prioritize being understanding of others and their differences in viewpoints because we all come from different walks of life which have shaped how we view the world. I believe that in order to create real and meaningful change in this world, we need to be more open to new ideas and perspectives.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I want the readers to know that no matter where they are in life, whether they are at their highest potential or lowest, remain humble and be who they are. Don’t try to replicate others because you will never know what they’ve had to grow through to get to where they are.
What is for you will always be for you. Live the best life you can, love people as hard as you can, and when you face obstacles, make sure you learn the lesson and laugh about it later on. Know that you are worthy of the life you desire.
