Life & Work with Christine Irizarry-Amoruso

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christine Irizarry-Amoruso.

Hi Christine, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my company in 2017 after leaving a long, stressful career working in corporate. After speaking with friends and networking with other entrepreneurs, I realized that there are many small and mid-size businesses that lack sufficient accounting support. A lightbulb went off in my head telling me that I should use my extensive background in accounting to help business owners bridge the gaps of business growth, employee talent, and financial deficiencies. After consulting with a few businesses, I began to see another problem these businesses were experiencing and it involved bookkeeper fraud.

After graduating from Florida Atlantic University with a Master’s Degree in Forensic Accounting and after successfully passing the comprehensive Certified Fraud Examiner tests, I attained my CFE designation and set out on a mission to not only bring my expertise with accounting into the field but also help businesses mitigate their risk associated with bookkeeper fraud. This type of occupational fraud often goes undetected for a very long time before being uncovered and can have severe financial impact to the business.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to entrepreneurship is not the easiest of roads to travel. One of the hardest things for me was no longer having a work-life balance. Most entrepreneurs are forced to work long hours, be many different types of employees at the same time, find new customers, keep the doors open, manage cash flow, and be okay with rejection.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My specialty is acting as the cleanup crew. Many business owners are reactive instead of keeping a proactive approach to managing their operations. Often times when I’m brought in to consult, the business has suffered fraud or loss, has no controls over their financial operations, has a cash flow leak without knowing where it’s coming from or looking to grow and realize their current bookkeeper or accountant either can’t handle the growth or is not equipped and hasn’t done the job to the best of their ability. My experience with managing large accounting teams helps me with evaluating talent, having a qualified graduate degree coupled with two decades of practical working experience allows me to fix financial errors and recreate financial statements, networking with other professionals provides the business owner with access to ancillary services that can help and being an introvert helps me be a better listener. Many accounting and tax professionals often don’t listen to the needs of their client. I listen and process their message and arrive at solutions that help both of us to get the job done.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
The public needs to understand that small and mid-size businesses are the ones that grow the economy, big businesses do not. Small and mid-size businesses are the ones that open new locations, borrow commercial loans from the bank, add new employees, and contribute a significant portion to the economy.
