Conversations with Rachel Schultz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Schultz.

Hi Rachel, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I owned a pilates studios for 5 years and have been in the fitness industry for over 10 years now as an athlete, marathon runner, brand ambassador, and pilates studio owner. I would teach in specific outfits and found that they weren’t practical when it came to working out myself so I wanted to create my own. From this, Lerin was created. I have been working on Lerin for almost 3 years now starting with finding the right material that was up to my standard to be functional with features like compression and sweat-wicking. Once I found the perfect fabric, I wanted to make my visions come to life so I would sketch items and then had a designer make them into technical packets. With each prototype, I work out as well as wash and wear it to ensure that is functional. It has been a labor of love learning the ins and outs of manufacturing and producing a beautiful item.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it has been a very bumpy journey. We have tried over 15 different fabrics and gone through endless samples of items that never saw the light of day. In my dining room, we would try on each piece and filter through them by making our adjustments. Out of 30 samples, we might get one good garment. Learning the production timing was also something we had to adjust to as one garment may take up to 6 months to create. Overall, though, once we see a garment come to life and actually be worn, it is a very exciting experience.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am the founder of Lerin, a women’s athletic apparel line. What sets me apart from other apparel line founders is that I have actually been in the fitness industry for a while now so I have been on the backside with hosting events and testing out other apparel lines. From this, I had a different standpoint on the athletic apparel industry than other owners. I have also noticed that most big athletic apparel brands are founded by men so I am proud to say that this is one of the first women-owned brands. Lerin is female-founded and operated. I also gave birth to my first child 6 days before we launched the company and have still been very hands-on in the creation of Lerin.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love everything about Miami. I love that Miami is a huge flagship for fitness. I have seen the fitness industry grow here over the past 10 years with new studios develop. I also love that the fitness community is so big and welcoming. The nice weather makes it for a great environment to live a happy healthy lifestyle. The one thing I don’t like, if I had to say something, is that there aren’t enough dog parks for me to take my bernadoodle.
