Check Out Drew Dwelly’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Drew Dwelly.

Hi Drew, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Originally, I got into boxing for something fun to learn and for a new type of workout, I never had intentions of actually fighting. My inner competitiveness gave me the drive to continue learning and the desire to try perfecting my skills. The more I learned, the more I wanted to continue and put it to the test. I was learning quickly and wanted to see what I was capable of. Every day was a new challenge to learn more and continue growing as a fighter. Once I got the thrill of being in that ring, I realized how much passion I have for it and I pretty much haven’t missed a day since. Having my first few amateur fights made me realize I had more to learn and I wanted to continue. As my skills started sharpening, I was flirting with the idea of turning pro. It didn’t take long for me to make up my mind that I did want to follow that path. In a very short time, I have accomplished a lot in the sport, winning amateur championships and already fighting for a WBC championship in the professional ranks. At 11-1 with 11 knockouts I am on a fast-tracked path to achieve bigger things in the near future.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I have dealt with my share of challenges along the way in my career so far. Not only did I get into the sport much later than most people – age 27 the first time I ever walked into a boxing gym – I was making the transition from high school football, basketball, baseball to NCAA baseball into boxing. The different style of workout routines of building muscle and gaining weight for those sports was something I had to completely change. I started the process of cutting weight and trimming down from a heavyweight to becoming a middleweight. Once I felt I was in the right position to turn professional and I was ready to focus on going all in on my career, I had to deal with the heartache of losing my big brother. This took a very serious toll on me in every way imaginable. While I was dealing with that, less than a month later I tore my bicep mid-fight. I was able to still win the fight but had to go through surgery and rehab to recover from that to be able to step back into the ring. Luckily, I was able to make it through all of that and stay focused.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Outside of the boxing ring, I am an Elementary School Special Education Teacher. I currently teach a class with 10+ students in grades Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd. It is a rewarding career that really gives you a positive outlook on life because you realize how blessed you are to have the ability to do all of the things you are able to do. There are a lot of people that don’t have that option, but being able to give back to them in some way is fulfilling. It is a nice balance switching from school with the kids straight to the boxing gym on a daily basis. It is something very few get to experience, but I am lucky to have the ability to do that.
