Today we’d like to introduce you to Dan Shapiro.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
When our son was diagnosed with a severe bleeding disorder in 2008 at 10 months of age, it was recommended to us by his doctors that a helmet would be necessary to protect his head from injury. With this recommendation, they could not tell us where we could find a protective helmet that would be sufficient for his needs. In our search, we had a very hard time finding a lightweight helmet that would protect, provide comfort, and fit him properly.

Faced with this new challenge, we knew there had to be an easier solution to find a lightweight helmet that was able to adequately protect his head. In 2012 we created Opti-Cool Headgear© to engineer versatile soft protective helmets for multiple uses and with great characteristics such as extreme comfort, lightweight, moisture-wicking material, quality chin guard, stylish design, customizable, and most of all, excellent protection.

Today, our helmets have now evolved and can be used for a variety of uses. They can be used for medical purposes, noncontact sports, children learning to crawl or walk, and for many other purposes. Additionally, we have also developed a helmet that can allow for custom wrapped cold packs to be placed anywhere inside the helmet. This optional cold pack design can provide relief from headaches/Migraines, allow for multiple cold packs to be placed on the head without falling off, and can be used during and after strenuous activity to keep the head cool.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Yes, It has been a pretty smooth road thus far. Because of the type of product and newness to the market, we had a learning curve to overcome. We want to make the best and most versatile helmets available.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I would not do anything different. I am proud of what I have been able to accomplish. The struggle and hard work is what makes us who we are.
