Today we’d like to introduce you to Luz Nieto.
Hi Luz, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Since the time I was in middle school, I was convinced that I was going to become an attorney. In 7th Grade they I did an assessment that analyzed and told the student what they would likely become when they were grown up. Of course, mine came out as an attorney. This was huge motivation for me and for my parents because as of that moment if anyone asked me “what do you want to be when you grow up?” I would responds AN ATTORNEY and so would my parents. hahaha. Although I knew what I wanted to be, I didn’t quite know what area of the law I would like until I was studying in my undergrad degree.
During this time, I had the opportunity to intern in the Domestic Violence Unit in the Palm Beach County State Attorney’s office as a victim advocate. I was blessed to be able to work one on one with a victim advocate by the name Grace who had been working as a victim advocate for over 30 years. She was extremely influential in the next professional decisions I would make. The time spent in the State Attorney’s Office were of great influence to me as I was able to help victims navigate and get through what quite frankly is an extremely traumitizing and difficult moment in their life. From this point on I knew that I wanted to work with families, but I did not want to be exposed to the criminal aspect of it all. Thereafter, I had the privilege of attending Nova Law in Davia Florida, and get my law degree. I put all my efforts in Family Law and interned with Judge Birken, administrative Judge at the time for the 17th Judicial Circuit. This solidified my decision to aim my career to Family Law and help families who are going through divorce, paternity actions with or without domestic violence issues. I do handle civil domestic violence issues to this date as part of my practice and given my past experience it has helped my clients tremendously.
In 2017 I decided to open up my practice after having my firstborn that same year. She was shy of 6 months old when I made this decision. My firm has now been open since 2017 and I am a mother of three.
The goal for my firm is to have a group of team members that can not only feel empowered as employees but also permit my them to have a personal life where their families are priority.
I have a great team that I can honestly say have valued my goals for the firm and we have had tremendous growth since 2017. We are now a five-person firm, and we are hopeful for continued growth in the future.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Struggles have existed from the onset. From making the decision to open up my first with $0 in the bank and no clients to now having a 5-person staffed firm. I have had many struggles but have had great professionals help me along the way.
Further being a women in the law field has its struggles in and of itself and to add to that I am a minority. My family is from Colombia, and I am a fully bilingual individual. I strive to help clients who have an English barrier and provide them legal services they need to get through their family case.
I am also now a mother of three so work balance has taken a while; caring for my kids, my firm, pick-ups drop-offs, and being a wife are all daily struggles. However, I have made it through with great parents and a great Husband and of course long nights until literally 4 am the next day. But we do what we can 🙂
We’ve been impressed with Law Office of Luz D. Nieto, P.A., but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I specialize in Family and Marital Law. Specifically, I handle Divorce, Paternity, child support, prenups, and postnuptial agreements. I provide my clients the options to handle their matters either in an uncontested format, a legal traditional format, or the collaborative law arena. My goal is never to be a shark attorney. My goal is to get the clients through this process with the least negative impact possible, which includes less financial burden and less emotional and psychological stress. Of course, this is inevitable depending on the case, but I let my clients know this is always the goal. My mission is to help families move along with the least trauma possible especially when we are addressing minor children who ultimately will need a health mother and father at the end of the tunnel.
We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I used to be a Colombian Folk Music dancer growing up.
