Meet Christina Rodriguez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Rodriguez.

Hi Christina, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I was born and raised in Miami. My parents emigrated from Cuba in the 80s. So, I was raised in a Cuban household. I grew up participating in my church’s band, taking piano lessons (from 6-20 years of age), teaching Sunday school, and being in the school choir. Music was always a big part of my life growing up. I graduate from Florida Christina High School in 2011 and went onto Miami Dade Honors College. I thought I wanted to study medicine but I ended up switching my major to Psychology. After 2 years there, I went to FIU Honors College. When I was almost done with my Bachelors, I was not quite sure what I wanted to do with my degree. I knew I wanted to help others.

During this time, I had a little cousin that was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. He only had a few words and was around 5 years old. I saw how difficult that was more my older cousin (his mom) and his dad. However, he began therapy and I was able to see how quickly the relationship between them changed and he was suddenly communicating with others! I immediately knew I wanted to be able to do that for others. That’s when I decided to major in Communication and Sciences Disorder and became a Speech Language Pathologist. After graduation, I began working in a private clinic, but my dream had always been to have my own business. A year after COVID hit, I decided to make the leap and start a company. That is how Watch Me Grow was born.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Not always. It was a bit nerve-wracking to leave the comfort of having a steady salary. When I left my old job, I had no clients at all. However, I have a wonderful husband and family that supported me along the way. Then imposter syndrome loves to kick in! But I love what I do so it has definitely been worth it.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a bilingual Speech Language Pathologist. The population I work with is children. I especially love working with toddlers and preschool/early elementary age. The main areas I focus on are Early Intervention, Language Disorders, Articulation, and with diagnosis such as Autism Spectrum Disorder. Currently, with my business, I travel to the client’s home or their school. This is a great way to treat in the child’s natural environment and a great was to get parents and teachers involved. I also offer telehealth sessions and go to school’s and present on specific topics. This offers a great opportunity so teachers and school faculty are aware of what to look for when making recommendations for therapy.

I am proud that I decided to start my own business and have had to become comfortable with putting myself out there.

What makes you happy?
Spending time with loved ones and my dog. Having a strong relationship with my husband and family is very important to me. Working with children also makes me very happy. It is so rewarding to hear a child say their first word or finally produce a sound they have been working on for some time or seeing. a parent connect with their child in a way they never have before. I love seeing the kids proud little faces when they accomplish something.
